Customer Reviews of The Harryhausen Collection
Harryhausen at his best! As a boomer born in the mid-fifties, I grew up with the work of Ray Harryhausen, the master of stop-motion animation who exemplifies the craft at its highest. This collection of three of his landmark films are to be treasured for their complex use of animation, exemplary storytelling, and unsurpassed use of music as an essential movie-making element.
Each of the three films has merits that make it perfect family entertainment. "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" with its interpretation of various myths of Arabian folklore is a wondrous epic. Although there were other Sinbad films to precede and follow it, this one stands alone as the one to measured by. The battle between Sinbad and the skeleton was only surpassed by the one found in...
Harryhausen's own masterpiece: "Jason & the Argonauts." NBC's upcoming miniseries based on the same story has some mighty big shoes to follow. With Bernard Herrmann's clashing score, the movie makes Greek mythology excitedly come alive in its presentation of the gods and their interactions with mortals. One of the film's most memorable effects is the towering Talos as he suspends the Argo in air, capsizing the crew into the waters below. But the true highlight is the battle between Jason and crew and, not one, but seven armed skeletons. SUPERB!
Finally, "The Mysterious Island," based on Verne's classic completes this trilogy. A third collaboration with Herrmann results in another super combination of film and music. The action is relentless: a wild balloon ride, a gigantic crab, oversized bees, a sinister octopus, a devastating volcanic eruption, as well as Capt. Nemo and the Nautilus.
And ONE MEAN BIG CHICKEN.
I really get WORKED UP over these three!
