Customer Reviews of The Guess Who - The Spirit Lives On: Greatest Hits Live
The second string lineup of Canada's biggest band... To put it simply...Terry Hatty can sing just fine...and the best example of this is on their 1995 CD "The Lonely One" (aka "Liberty" if you bought the CD in Canada) The problem comes when Terry Hatty tries to handle the material known for being sung by Burton Cummings. The 1995 material sounds perfect with Hatty singing lead, but he's all wrong for stuff like "These Eyes" and tunes like that one that are best left to Mr. Cummings.
The overall effect is much like telling Sammy Hagar he has to do Burton's songs. Best advice: skip this one and get the double live "Runnin' Back Thru Canada" CD from the REAL lineup of Bachman, Cummings, Wallace, McDougall & Peterson. I was fortunate enough to be at their concert in Montreal in June of 2000, and to hear the crowd's reaction, you'd have thought GOD had walked out onstage...Burton Cummings looked so shocked and so moved by the crowd that he said at the end of the show "We have GOT to come back HERE!" The reason Jim Kale was not in the lineup for the 2000 and subsequent tours was officially listed as "family situation"...but with the endless parade of B- and C-string lineups Kale led through the 80s and early 90s, it's probably just as well...as for terry hatty...great singer...but with his own material, please...get Runnin' Back Thru Canada if you want the TRUE Guess Who live concert experience.
could have been better
while the playing on this cd is excellent, the lead singer seemed not to have a seriousattitude about it. "no time" alone, is worth the price of the cd.
You'll have to "Guess Who" this is!
Fans looking for the greatness of the Randy Bachman/Burton Cummings era Guess Who are going to be awfully disappointed when they hear bassist Jim Kale's listless, not-even-close to authentic 1997 edition of the band plod through tunes which most of the musicians in this band had nothing to do with! Cheaply recorded, with a cover without pictures of any band members (wonder why), this features somebody named Terry Hatty on lead vocals (easily the worst replacement for a replacement in the history of rock) and a simply awful selection of tired tunes. Is this the worst album I ever paid money for? It's enough to make me quit listening to music, it's so just plain horrible!
