Customer Reviews of The Girl Next Door (Unrated Version)
Moral Fiber... The Girl Next Door is a teen sex comedy starring, newcomers, Emile Hirsch and Elisha Cuthbert. Grossing $15 million at the domestic US box office, The Girl Next Door has collected somewhat poor criticism but has served as a star vehicle for Hirsch and Cuthbert. Most of the objections toward the picture concern misleading marketing, its heavy borrowing from other genre classics, and the "glamorizing of degenerate facets of current popular culture". <
> <
>Some of the prevalent predicaments that come to mind when thinking about the feature are the fact that it is uneven, unoriginal, and at times heartless. The Girl Next Door can almost be seen as an updated Risky Business, though the latter isn't really dated. Fortunately, the leads, Hirsch and Cuthbert, have quite a bit of charm and it makes the trite material alot more bearable. <

>Not to compare the two, but the characters' motives in Risky Business were generally apparent unlike the ones comprised in The Girl Next Door. At times, it is logical why Cuthbert is attracted to Hirsch; she sees something in him that she wishes she still had in herself. Alas, Hirsch's motives aren't as understandable. He appears to only yearn Cuthbert's character for superficial reasons. If the writers didn't persistently undercut the material with lewd and unnecessary scenes, they could have built something alot more special and memorable. <

>Luke Greenfield's deft direction is applaudable, and the leads work well together. Hirsch probably delivers a slightly better performance than Cuthbert, but that may be because the writers give her nothing more to do than sit around and bat her lashes. Chris Marquette and Timothy Olyphant are nicely casted and deliver several humorsome scenes and lines. Many of the soundtrack choices are great as well; Echo & The Bunnymen, Queen, and Filter are just a few. <

>Overall, The Girl Next Door has potential largely due to its leads but is constantly undermined by its writers.
You'' be Glad You Brought This Girl Home
While originality wasn't the main driving force behind the overall plotline of this very funny film (it owes more than a minor debt to Risky Business), this is much more than just 110 minutes of schoolboy eye-candy. The story develops at an enjoyable pace, works in several clever twists, and contains more than a couple of genuinely funny gags. This is a very entertaining pile of pop-trash - perhaps not a great flick for the politically correct brigade, but undoubtedly proving that, when it comes to teen-coms, there's definitely life after American Pie.
hilarious not your average teenage movie
this movie is the perfect blend of teenage immaturity and perversion we have all come to love thanks to movies like american pie and likes. it has your average high school student makes good grades, president of the student council, etc. who falls in love with the lady who is housesitting his neighbors house...he falls in love with her only to find she is a porn star, and things go downhill for him from there. this is a movie to be watched not as a teenie bopper flick but seriously, it has a perfect blend also of comedy and drama. fans of the american pie type of movies, and fans of porno both should love this one, it will go down in history.
