The Dish, a good-natured and effortlessly funny Australian drama-comedy directed by Rob Sitch (The Castle), is filled with warm-hearted characters and has a factual hook that's irresistibly inspiring. This cumulative goodwill springs forth from the rural town of Parkes in New South Wales, where a 1,000-ton radio observatory dish is recruited to relay telemetry, voice, and television signals from the historic Apollo 11 moon landing in July 1969. To make sure the dish delivers Neil Armstrong's "giant leap for mankind" to 600 million eager viewers, site director Cliff Buxton (Sam Neill, at his gentle best) relies on a three-man crew consisting of an American NASA watchdog (Patrick Warburton, resembling a bearish Clark Kent), a sarcastic engineer (Kevin Harrington), and a lovestruck math whiz (Tom Long) who's pining for the sister of the dish's rather dimly overzealous security guard (Taylor Kane).

Numerous other supporting characters add color to the proceedings, and crises arise (albeit briefly) when power outage, signal loss, and windstorms threaten to spoil Parkes's proudest hour. It all rates a bit high on the cuteness meter, but The Dish is so smoothly amusing that you won't object to its eagerness to please. By focusing on the Aussie locals, the film reminds us that the moon landing was an occasion of global unity, and pride in all humanity is reflected in the wondrous smiles of Cliff, his crew, and the citizens of Parkes. That they played such a small but pivotal role in this historical milestone is just one of many joys to be discovered in this delightful little movie. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews of The Dish

At a lowpoint for the World recalls a highpoint
...

"The Dish" recalls a moment in history where the World viewed, on television, a triumph of mankind. It humorously tells the story (embellished, but who cares) of how the television pictures of mans' first steps on the moon were captured by a Radio Telescope in Australia.

The comic aspects of the movie center on the culture clash between the sarcastic, laid back Australians, and the efficient, goal oriented American NASA guy.

However, the true triumph of The Dish is how well the director captures the excitement, happiness and magic of the moon landing. As somebody too young to remember the actual event, the final sequences of the movie were truly emotional. The feeling was of a world united.

"We came in Peace for all Mankind" seems a wonderful sentiment in these troubled times.

A Perfect Little Film
Most of us who were over 5 years old at the time, remember where they were when Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon. This monumentally emotional moment for mankind, albeit thoroughly superfluous scientific achievement, is the background for this beautifully constructed film.

The thing that makes this film so special is the fact that there isn't a character that appears on screen that you don't care about, regardless how small the role. That takes true writing and directing talent!

The entire small town of Parks, New South Wales, Australia is all atwitter, because their radio observatory dish has been chosen to be NASA's official link to the Apollo 11 mission in the southern hemisphere. The mayor's wife comments, while serving her joint of lamb, that man being moments away from landing on the moon makes their problems seem mundane... That's the beauty of the film, you care so much about these people; their problems are anything but mundane - you cheer-on the techno-nerd asking the town beauty to go out with him; you ache inside because the head of the observatory lost his wife a year ago and she can't be there to revel in his glory; you love the fact that the out-of-place NASA official is the only one who realizes that all the mayor's rebellious teenage daughter really needs to chill-out is an ounce of respect.

This is the best kind of feel-good film. An absolute jewel that you'll want to watch more than just once.

The Dish Delivers!
With typical subtle Australian humor, The Dish is the true story of one of the elements of Apollo 11 moon landing. The year is 1969, and the music reflects this time period perfectly. The Dish refers to an enormous radio telescope in Australia, in the middle of a sheep paddock. This particular radio telescope was the only facility that was able to receive transmission from the Apollo mission on the moon. Through a series of mishaps, the crew of this particular instillation managed to overcome enormous odds to transmit live feed from the moon. This film never gained the popularity it enjoyed in it's native Australia, which is a real pity since it is just delightful. If you would like to experience a slice of history that changed the world in a positive direction, please get your hands on this film! I guarantee you will be pleased!
