Crystal Key is a first-person science fiction adventure of alternate worlds, holographic communication, and planetary survival. Gameplay is similar to Myst, with lush graphics and challenging puzzles.

Your planet, whose origins are never specified, has intercepted a space-radio transmission warning of the impending arrival of an alien master of evil: Ozgar. The transmission reveals that the only people to have ever thwarted Ozgar's fiendish advances live on the mysterious planet Arkonia. Soon after your planet decodes the message, Ozgar arrives and starts doing his evil overlord thing, disrupting the ecosystem, changing the tides, and throwing the planet into tectonic upheaval with superpowerful magnetic satellites. The only way you can save your world is by finding the Arkonians.

Your search leads you through various worlds, reachable by use of a Crystal Key artifact and mysterious Arkonian Portal Technology. Finely detailed puzzles and limited character interaction drive the adventure forward, climaxing in the inevitable battle-of-wits encounter with the malevolent Ozgar.

Crystal Key's puzzles are inventive, but the sparse QuickTime video sequences are buggy, as is the game in general--be sure to save often. Gameplay is often incredibly slow, a result of sluggish load times and random lockups. But if you can tolerate these technical annoyances, you'll discover Crystal Key unlocks an engaging adventure. --Madeleine Miller

Customer Reviews of The Crystal Key

A good game with a better plot!
In my opinion, The Crystal Key is a good game. However, it does have some problems. First of all, when you're looking around the area, the graphics don't blend easily. Also, the puzzles are very challenging (actually, I love challenging games). But I must say it has a very interesting plot. When you finish the game, the villain dies and a screen comes up and says, "Congradulations! You've defeated Ozgar and freed your people!" Then it goes to the main screen. Not much of a congrats. This is the plot: Somewhere out there among the stars, lives another race of people. We know this because, just weeks ago our radio telescopes accidentally intercepted one of their interplaetary communications. When we were able to decode it, this is what we read: "Danger: Ozgar has been defeated but not destroyed. Suralon is sinking. Return to Arkonia. Abandon all colonies at once." Who were the Arkonians? And who or what is Ozgar? Only days later, a gigantic alien spaceship deployed powerful satellites around the earth. All kinds of upheavals occured in the next two days: devastating earthquakes, critical weather shifts, and drastic gravitational changes. Ozgar is coming after us. You, a hypership test pilot, are relatively safe in the polar research station, where the world's first hypership is being constructed. After scientists successfully pinpoint the origin of the Arkonian signal, you are chosen as the last hope; savior of the planet. Your mission? Find the Arkonians and defeat the evil Ozgar. I would recommend this game to people who are very experienced with strategy games.

Beautiful, but lacking a story and a good payoff
The Crystal Key has environments just as breathtaking as the ones shown on the box. Exploring them is a joy. However, there is practically no story. You crash land on a planet and basically puzzle your way "out", which involves transporting to other worlds, etc.

The puzzles are interesting, but often too easy and too linear. This is the type of game where finding a screwdriver on the ground means you'll be needing it for a puzzle around the corner.

Some environments, like the subway and the corporate skyscraper in the lake, are so well designed you want to see them populated with people. At the very least, you want some sort of character interaction. But there is none whatsoever.

Don't expect a good payoff ending. An anticlimactic ending is a pretty common complaint with most adventure games, but this one is pretty bad. It just suddenly ends. The only adventure game with a more abrupt ending is "Lighthouse", but at least that one had a few mythical characters living in its rich environments.

Still, if you love exploring awesome settings, this is the title for you. It's definitely worth the low Amazonian price. Just don't attempt to compare it to the great adventure games, like Riven, Morpheus, and Obsidian.

A Game?
I have to agree with my fellow reviewers this game was highly disapointing. The graphics aren't that impressive, the easily motion sick people I suggest that you stay away from this game for when you move the graphics get quite blurry and the movement is quite wreckless.
I got extremly board with the game and have yet to finish it (which I don't think I ever will.)
This game (if you could call it that) is a waste of money and time. As many others have mentioned this game has little point and no clues as to where to head next.
