The Critic took particular glee in zinging Howard Stern, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Woody Allen and Soon-Yi. (We pause to praise the show's unsung heroes, Maurice Le Marche and Nick Jameson, who provide uncanny celebrity impersonations each episode). Some references have a longer shelf life than others. Conan O'Brien, at the time a fledgling talk-show host, certainly got the last laugh on a spied newspaper headline, "Conan Replaced by Dancing Chicken." And the series' best episode, in which Jay reunites an estranged Roger Ebert and the late Gene Siskel, plays now as a touching tribute to the original Thumb and Thumber. The Critic is poised for discovery. Is it too much to hope that, as with Family Guy, voluminous DVD sales may spark interest in creating new episodes? --Donald Liebenson

Customer Reviews of The Critic - The Complete Series
An overlooked work of art.... Firstly, i must say that this has to be the worst paced animated show I've ever watched. That is a characteristic you MUST get used to in order to enjoy this set as much as i did. Other than that, and the unchangeable fact that some of the jokes show their age...painfully, this show ranks up there with the smartest and most biting of all sitcoms. Sure this point is covered up by the rampant childish humor, but that is also the genious that was meant to be seen. A show where you must peel away the ill-contrivances to see the true core-meaning of it. It is stupid for the sake of being smart. I think that confusing point i just mentioned was the reason why this series was so short lived. People ,all to often, do not want to think about what they are watching. And since the obvious things that occur in these shows, on the face appear insipid, underneath they are genious. Jon Lovitz is a creative mastermind, (NO i am NOT Jon Lovitz....),who deserves to have his own show. And, the writers of this program worked together perfectly to deliver a show that was worthy of him. Too bad it was not worthy of network television. Actually, i guess that's a good thing............
"It Stinks...!~!!!!!"
For real fans of the show you wil realize my title is not a dig at the show...This is a great set and for the price you are getting your moneys worth. There are plenty of extras which i will let you know about...
Commentary Tracks
Although there aren't tracks for every episode like there are on The Simpsons releases, we're treated to 8 entertaining tracks for The Critic. Jon Lovitz was busy on another project when they were recording these tracks so he wasn't able to take part in them.
Trailers (4:12)
Contemporary TV (2:06) and Original Programming TV (2:06).
Animated Storyboards
Storyboards, animatics and finished product can be seen during "A Pig-Boy and His Dog." Just look for the spinning film reel and press the enter key.
Trailer Parodies (4:36)
I had fun watching all the funny trivia bits, until I made the mistake of pressing "enter" on the remote and ending the fun. That's okay because then I was treated to funny film parodies from the show.
Top Ten List (6:22)
Those funny trivia bits are here too, and once they're done you can watch some clips of movies from Jay's show, Coming Attractions.
Creating "The Critic" (11:49)
More fun facts here as well. This featurette traces the creation of the show, the look of "the Critic" and voice acting. Features interviews with Mike Reiss (co-creator/executive producer), Al Jean (co-creator/executive producer), James L. Brooks (executive producer), Rich Moore (original visual designer), Maurice LaMarche (character voices), Nick Jameson (character voices).
Webisodes (34:23)
In 2000 The Critic returned, sort of. These 10 episodes were available online, and now they're available on here in regular DVD format. The picture quality is great, but the frame rate seems a bit low.
Amazing, Wonderful
I first came across The Critic over the internet in one of their Webisodes. I loved it all. I loved the film parodies and Jay's reviews. I loved all the humor in it. It was very brilliant. This was before I ever watched The Simpsons. I love The Simpsons and then when I got those DVDs and listened to the commentaries I realized that the producers that made that show brilliant made The Critic. So I got the DVDs and they're great. It has all the webisodes and I love to listen to the commentaries. The Making of the Critic is also very interseting. It angers me that FOX took this show off the air and let's carbon-copy crap like Family Guy air. This show is great and I hope they can start making new episodes.
