Customer Reviews of The Count of the Old Town
Ingrid Bergman's film debut in a Swedish Bohemian comedy After a bit part in one previous picture, Ingrid Bergman made her official film debut in the Swedish film "The Count of Old Town" ("Munkbrogreven"). The "Count" is the leader of a group of free Bohemian spirits who spend the day drinking beers, the nights sleeping in flop joints, and try to keep one step ahead of the police because there are strict liquor-rationing laws in Stockholm at this time. Basically this film comes across as a Swedish version of a Mack Sennett comedy. Bergman plays Inga, a maid in a cheap motel, who is seeing one of the young Bohemians. The role is relatively minor and the Swedish critics described her variously as "beautiful and statuesque," "hefty and sure of herself," and "with an unusual way of speaking her lines." Miss Bergman's notices would improve in the future. This 1934 film (also known in English as "The Count of the Monk's Bridge"), directed by Edvin Adolphson and Sigurd Wallen, is in Swedish with English sub-titles.
