Customer Reviews of The Cold Vein
"Yo, you cats ain't ready for this, heavy abyss..." This is Hip Hop far beyond the boundaries and limitations normally placed upon it. In fact, I remember years ago when I first heard The Cold Vein... to say that I understood it's beauty and genius right away would be a complete lie. It was unlike anything I had ever heard previously(or since... fella's what's up with a follow-up?!) and my ears struggled with what they were being fed... an ambiant and at times even off-beat and abrasive sonic backdrop(as brought to live as only El-P could) featuring MC's Vast Aire and Vordul Mega dropping rhymes that ranged from street level to downright archaic and incomprehensible. Here's a lyrical sample from track 14 titled Pigeon: <
> <
>"Birds of the same feather flock together <
>Congested on a majestic street corner <
>That's a short time goal for most of 'em <
>Cuz most of 'em <
>Would rather expand their wings and hover over greater things <
>That's what we call inspired flight <
>By the pigeons that gotta eat pizza crust every night <
>And "Let there be light" was understood <
>When a mic-stand descended from up-and-above into the hood <
>And if my face is worth a thousand words when it's scarred <
>I would only hope that two of those are coco and butta <
>To heal the wounds of the tissue scarred to mark the death of my womb." <
> <
>Not what most Mc's spit about to be sure and thankfully I gave it one last good listen before putting it up for sale here on Amazon. Slowly the music started seeping in and I thought to myself, "well, maybe this isn't complete trash after all?" For the rest of that day though, rhythms and quotes from the album constantly slipped in and out of my conscious until I flat out NEEDED to hear the album again. Cannibal Ox has that kind of addictive quality to it, it's unique and challenges the listener, and in the end is competely worth the effort. Coming from a rap fan who's collection consists of very few albums put out past 1996(and is far from a Def Jux fan), The Cold Vein is a materpiece that provides a great contrast to everything else you've ever heard prior... in the words of Vast Aire, hearing this album is "like God's on my side and he answered my Christmas list."
great album
if the beatles ever made a rap album this is it. one of the best albums I've ever heard; the beats from beginning to end are sick and it has great lyrics to accompany them. this album is for those that really love hip hop at its purest
not a kid just did'nt want to sign in
this album ranks up there with "Enter the Wu Tang (36 chambers)","Liquid Swords", "Illmatic", and the rest of the top hip hop albums of all times. it is a pioneering and masterful work of lyricism and production. El-P's producing is incredible. him and the Rza are my favorite producers. anyway, buy buy buy! you wont regret it!
