The 11 songs here tilt toward that collection, with a nod to its sequel, and all share the band's shrewd synthesis of tightly crafted songs that explore a tension between romantic yearning and neurotic anxiety. Principal songwriter Ric Ocasek swaps vocal leads with bassist Ben Orr, establishing their familiar yin and yang, with Ocasek mining neurosis while Orr plucks the heartstrings. David Robinson's muscular, uncluttered drumming transcends its frequent use of electronic drums, Greg Hawkes's keyboards deftly stretch the sci-fi possibilities of then- primitive synths, and not-so-secret weapon Elliot Easton, a southpaw guitarist, tightens the clockwork interplay between his versatile lead guitar and Ocasek's crisp rhythm work. If the band's choral work sounds thinner than on their recordings, it's less an indictment of the band than a measurement of how far producer Roy Thomas Baker carried the heavily layered vocal stamp he had refined with the Cars' labelmates, Queen.
The original program source confines the audio to a monaural mix, and the video transfer suffers from some intermittent raster patterns. Such artifacts are minor handicaps given the caliber of the performance. --Sam Sutherland

Customer Reviews of The Cars Live - Musikladen 1979
A real treat for Cars fans! This DVD is a must have for all Cars fans and is sure to make Cars fans out of newcomers as well. The recent tragic passing of vocalist/bassist Benjamin Orr to pancreatic cancer makes this release extra special for those of us who followed the band, and who continue to long after their breakup in 1988. The live portion shows exactly why they were immensely popular and are regarded as excellent musicians to this day. Their sound was tight, and their musicianship professional. The never released song "Take what you want" is a true testament to the abilities of guitarist Elliot Easton to rock with the best of them. Ben's vocals are at their very best, hitting every note perfectly. Pay special attention to Greg Hawkes performance during "I'm in touch with your world" as he creates every single background sound manually, without the help of synthesizers. Ric's cool stage presence and excellent lyrics make every song fun to listen to. David Robinson's drumming is often overlooked when compared to the likes of Terry Bozzio and Neil Peart, but his performance is tight, concise, and extremely skilled every time, placing him in my top 5 all-time favorite drummers. A bonus for the DVD version is an interview conducted during the summer of 2000 with the entire band. It was truly great to see the guys back together to dicuss their career, though Ben is visibly ill at this point and says very little. My only complaint is that Rhino advertises the DVD as containing a "rare scrapbook with memorabilia" which just does not exist. Buy this DVD!!!
A terrific snapshot of the band in its early days
A wonderful, intimate performance by a band not known as a live act. The guys in The Cars aren't terrific showmen, but boy can they play their music! They tighten and cohere the further into their set they go, and it's definitely a more upbeat, kick-ass sound than you hear on their records.
Another viewer complained about the absence of a stereo mix, but the output from your DVD player's analog stereo output is just that. That said, the sound--even in Dolby Digital 5.1--is not the greatest, and it may even be re-channeled mono. But it's perfectly serviceable for the task at hand: conveying the live chemistry and great music of this band. To its credit, the surround mix places us right inside the tiny TV studio with the band, enhancing the intimacy of the performance.
The video quality is pretty poor, as the master is a 21-year-old videotape, but--as with the audio--it gets the point across.
Elliot Easton (lead guitar) shines, and there's some nice interaction between him and Benjamin Orr (bassist/vocalist). Lengthy interviews are interesting and sad; the honey-voiced Orr, months before his death, is emaciated.
Don't be suckered by reports of a Cars 10-song sampler--the songs appear only in short snippets. Nevertheless, this is a must for any fan of late-'70s Cars music!
What a find!! - I dont know why some gave this low rating
This is a must see DVD of the CARS performing in the beginning of their carrer. Some people have complained about the picture and sound. I cant understand what they expect from footage shot in the late 1970's!!!!! Considering the age of this show the sound and picture are great. I think we should all should feel lucky that we have access to see this concert at all. I guess they are looking for something as the same quality as if it was shot in 2004????
Don't hesitate on buying this. This has classic CARS songs on it and the interview at the end is nice also to see them all together again
