Customer Reviews of The Beach
The "Let's Bash Leo" bus has Finally left town. The Frenzy has finally died down, Leo has made his first "Post-Titanic" film, Critics and Audiences jump on the "Bad Mouth Band-Wagon", the film Sinks at the Box-office, it comes out on DVD, More Mixed Reviews, a few Months pass, ...type in "the beach", loading, loading, AHH, 5 star, 4 stars, 5 stars. The Madness is Finally Over. The Real Reviewers are coming out of the Wood work.
I Love this movie, and I'll Defend it, and Leo, as long as there is air in my Lungs. Critic: "It's Muddled and Can't decide what it wants to be". Me: Thats the point, Unrestricted, it's wants to be FREE, the film is about letting go. I love films that try to be Action, Romance, Thrillers. Everyone can Enjoy. Critic: "It starts good, then goes crazy". Me: Again, thats the point. A desent into madness, a downward spiral, a world without laws is doomed to chaos. stuff like that. Remember, when "Apocalypse Now" came out, Critics and Audiences reviewed that for the wrong reasons to, because of the sucess of "the Godfather".
If you didn't like the Beach first time around, see it again, give it another chance, a chance it deserves.
Absolutely Superb
Well, first of all and after reading the other's reviews, i will start by saying that it amazes me that you can't recognize the talent of Leo Di Caprio and the brilliant script of this movie. I guess everybody who's seen "the beach" have made it with a pre-made idea of "oh well, let's see another dumb movie, with beautiful girls and landscapes"... I'm very sad and surprised that no one shares with me the point of view that the director was able to put out on screen. we should all look at our lives and ask ourselves if this is it?!? About Leo, as my favourite actor, i have to say to all of you Leo dislikers: "watch Gilbert Grape, romeo & juliet, basketball diaries, titanic or why not...the beach!" this should be enough to change you mind. "The Beach" DVD is excellent, super complete, excellent sound and image, so make yourselves a favor and buy a copy ok? :)
Well, I enjoyed it....
As a preface/disclaimer, I am a film studies major who appreciates inventive directing etc., but I also enjoy a cheap thrill...In terms of writing and style of directing, I wouldn't say it was the most original. However, it brings up an interesting moral dilemma, much like that of the great high school read "Lord of the Flies;" being, how much should you sacrifice for the good of your society, or whatever you would title the somewhat primitave infant island culture. Besides this question, it also delves into the life of Leo's character, who is at the age where he's not young anymore but not ready to settle into a career or a life role when he is still searching for his identity. As a college participant, I can certainly identify with this problem and I am sure that many others within 10 years of my age can as well. I wouldn't say that I would grant this movie a best picture nomination but it is worth viewing for the ideas that it brings up, not to mention the sites it depicts are well worth seeing. I guess girls who went to see Titanic 20 million times would like it as well, just so long as they could mute the movie and giggle with their friends about DiCaprio's pouty lips.
