Solid Monthly on Current Events
The Atlantic is an outstanding monthly publication that covers current events, politics, finance, book reviews, and now, technology. Tracing its origin back to the mid 1800's when it was started by a group of literary luminaries (including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and Ralph Waldo Emerson), The Atlantic (now no longer called "The Atlantic Monthly") still remains a leading American magazine of strong reputation, combining intriguing and important topics with strong journalism and outstanding writing. Most people look forward to receiving their copy each month that it is printed. I'm one of them. <

>The majority of issues will focus on outstanding political and/or financial issues of the day, with at least one lead article that is the result of many months of journalistic research into that theme. It is true that recent years have often seen the Atlantic focusing on military aspects of foreign policy, but perhaps this is less the result on an ideological bent on the part of the publication than a reflection of the realities American foreign policy decisions in the past years have brought to the world. Whether we agree or disagree with any supposed ideological "leanings" of the magazine (real or imagined), we don't have to suspend belief in order to get through the articles: most pieces are solidly written, possess solid analysis, and generally describe pros and cons of virtually any position within the area of discussion. Many of these articles are written by current and past policy makers, political scientists, military experts, and so on, and there is almost always much to learn in every issue. <

>The Atlantic also devotes a number of pages each month to book reviews, and some of these reviews are literary works in their own right. Christopher Hitchens can often be found reviewing some new work on a literary figure, and the reviews also cover historical pieces, biographies, and other works of recent note. <

It's a fantastic way to do some minor historical research, and if nothing else, is a doorway to see how things have changed in the country since the time the then "Atlantic Monthly" began publication. Maybe it's great, but I never received it.
Do yourself a favor; if you want this magazine, order from them directly or use one of those mail-in forms. I ordered this item and never received it after waiting patiently for months. I eventually got a refund, but who wants the hassle?

no more fiction
This is a fine and worthy magazine, but I canceled my subscription last year when they stopped publishing fiction, and because of that I won't go back. Harper's and The New Yorker continue to satisfy my fiction needs.
