Suspension of disbelief is a challenge when the movie glosses over so many of its logistical details (like, where does one buy an old NASA space capsule?), and in trying for a kind of Capra-esque, eccentrically Western spin on the American dream, the Polish twins--director Michael and cowriter/actor Mark (making their mainstream debut after such indie hits as Twin Falls, Idaho and Northfork)--are only marginally successful in making Charlie's ambition genuinely believable. The film works much better as a kind of post space-age fable for families, and it's just involving enough to make its climax emotionally rewarding, mostly because Thornton, Madsen, and their costars (including Bruce Dern and Tim Blake Nelson) handle the delicate material with the earnestness it needs to be marginally convincing. Elton John's "Rocket Man" is predictably heard over the closing credits (accordingly, Charlie's launch-time is "zero hours, nine a.m."), and at a time when several adventurous entrepreneurs (including Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos) are gradually developing a civilian space-flight industry, The Astronaut Farmer is an admirable yet forgivably flawed reminder that we should never stop reaching for the stars. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews of The Astronaut Farmer
Disappointing I guess I should have gone with my initial instinct to pass on this one, but a 99c rental made it too easy to download. The idea of overcoming adversity, opposition and skepticism to achieve your dreams is a fine theme for a movie, but this one pushes so far past the bounds of plausibility and uses such tired caricatures that it just became annoying.
Great Movie
My family loved this film. The Astronaut Farmer portrays a strong model of a father, one that is often (if rarely) portrayed in film. The last half of the film had us nearly in tears, and the ending left us feeling like we could conquer the world.

>While there is some mild profanity, this is a must see movie for all families, and especially all fathers.
Worth a rental
I was very intrigued by the premise of this film. I'm sure most people remember Spaceship One which was the first privately built and flown spacecraft that made its maiden voyage into Earth's outermost atmosphere back in 2004, which sort of makes this a timely film (and PLAUSABLE, despite what the naysayers say or think).

>The movie is well acted and filmed and it does have some shining moments. When Thornton actually lifts off (the 2nd time), I realized that I had a HUGE smile on my face. What a wonderful scene! Also, the relationship he had with his kids and his wife was portrayed very well.

>I don't think I'm going to spend the money to own this one. It was good, but a one-time viewing is enough I think. Yes, the film is decent, but I felt that a number of scenes were a little too hokey for my tastes and the ending seemed abrupt, like the director was trying to quickly wrap everything up in a nice, neat little package with bright, shiny wrapping paper.

>Of special note is the blooper/gag reel in the special features section. Look for the scene where Thornton does his classic Karl character from "Sling Blade". Hilarious!
