Customer Reviews of The Art of Can Belto
Hold on to your pantyhose! This drag queen does some things vocally that the likes of David Daniels, Randall Wong, and Aris Christofellis can't match. Here in this album "The Art of Can Belto" Davina Pons, dragmatic soprano proves that she/he is one of the best high countertenors or sopranists in the world. What's remarkable about this is that Miss Pons is not a formally trained singer and has apparently learned to sing by listening to opera recordings. I hope Amazon will add sound clips, but if they don't you can hear some at www dot davinapons dot com. This CD will put a smile on your face. The photos are fabulous, the bio is hilarious and the singing is amazing. If you like the countertenor voice, it's well worth adding to your collection if you like drag queens or not. And if you're a drag queen, good luck following in those big footsteps!
A Unique Vocal Experience
You've never heard a man sing like this. While some other countertenors have the pitch range that Davina has, her dynamic range is beyond anyone else I've heard in this category. The top register is huge and expansive, and most impressive. And Davina doesn't just bellow. The accuracy and flexibility in the Handel and Mozart are as delightful as the amazingly long, haunting phrases of Summertime and Addio del passato. I have had the pleasure of hearing Davina live several times, including her portrayal of Mabel in "Pirates of Penzance" in Washington DC, and in opera scenes (her spin on "Addio" is...unusual) , and this recording captures the essence of the amazing abilities of this six and a half foot tall soprano with the baritone speaking voice. And the liner notes are a hoot! A must-buy and a great bargain here.
