Customer Reviews of The Amityville Horror
CREEPY AS HELL FOR IT'S TIME This is a very, very underrated horror movie. One of the best "haunted house" movies ever made, in my opinion. When watching this movie, you have to keep in mind that it was made 25 years ago, before CGI effects and the like. With what was available at the time, this is a very creepy movie. This film didn't rely so much on effects as it did atmosphere. Watch the movie with the controvesy over the accuracy out of mind, and just sink into it and listen to the sounds, the music, and look at the sets and appreciate it for what it is. This is a great scary movie if you watch it as just that, a movie, and don't worry about if it really happened or not. The performances (with the exception of Rod Steiger hamming it up in every frame he is in) are excellent, the set design is awesome, the house is creepily beautiful, and the music is some of the most haunting that you'll hear. Plus, the puking Nun is a hoot! The grossest, most violent sounding vomit I have heard! Anyway, the widescreen print is gorgeous and so very appreciated by me, who has waited for years to have it in widescreen. Would have liked an updated sound, but I'll take what I can get! Love the movie, love the house, love it all!
This Film Will Give You The Creeps. Very Well Made.
This is the first time I have ever seen a double-sided DVD disc. One side is the Widescreen version, the other side is the standard version. The Amityville Horror film is loosely based on the real-life account of the son of the Ronald De Feo family who killed all six members of his family sleeping in the house in the middle of the night. His father and himself had a heated arguement prior. The book and the film highly fictionalized the supernatural happenings, however two people (one claimed psychic) who had entered the house after the tragic incidents had taken place had their own story to tell and no doubt other owners of the house as well. In any case, the book became a bestseller and the film was a hit. This film will give you the creeps. I suggest you watch it in the dark for extra goosebumps. James Brolin, Margot Kidder and Rod Steiger offer excellent performances. Don Stroud is also in this film. You might remember him from The Buddy Holly Story (1978) and License To Kill (1989). Natasha Ryan is one child you may recognize from Sybil (1976-TVM) and The Entity (1983). K.C. Martel and Meeno Peluce are also recognizable.
"GET OUT!"
It gets two stars for that scene alone! YIKES! I don't know, maybe it was because I read the book first that made me dislike this film so much. The book by the way is down right creepy - highly recommendable! If you haven't seen the movie yet, rent it first and then go from there. It's fairly disappointing but worth checking out.
