The story of the most innovative trains in America is beautifully told in this documentary that aired as an episode of the American Experience series on PBS.Streamliners first arrived on the scene during the Depression, and their impact was profound. Not only were the spectacular new trains the height of luxurious travel, but their sleek modernistic appearance kicked off a craze to streamline everything, right down to kitchen toasters. Remarkable period films show the trains being constructed and speeding down the rails, and interviews with historians as well as people who traveled and worked on the trains provide comprehensive portraits of such legends as the famed Burlington Zephyr, which set a speed record streaking from Denver to Chicago in 1934. The trains themselves were mechanical wonders, and the film also focuses on the men who designed them, railroading visionaries who had to interrupt their manufacturing efforts to contribute to America's urgent demands for war material during World War II. Following the war the outlook for passenger rail travel looked bleak, but the streamliners produced in that period won fans who adored the luxurious accommodations they offered. The last trip of a streamliner, in 1970, is documented with dramatic photographs and reminiscences of those who made the trip. This is a fascinating film about an overlooked aspect of America's railroading history. --Robert J. McNamara
