Customer Reviews of The Amazing Transparent Man
A campy sci-fi horror film destined for MST3K treatment Of all of Edgar G. Ulmer's films, "The Amazing Transparent Man" stands out as the campiest of the "poverty row" auteur's work. This 58-minute film is a cheap, campy, science-fiction, horror film about a scientist, Dr. Peter Ulof (Ivan Triesault), who discovers the power of invisibility. Using a convict safecracker as his human guinea pig, Ulof wants to create an army of invisible zombies, but needs more radium. The convict is named Faust, so apparently the person who put together this script had at least heard of good writing. Of course, as we all know, there are some things man was not meant to tamper with and there are some serious side effects to the invisibility treatment that end up preventing the good doctor from selling his invisible army to the largest bidder. As soon as you see the title of this film is "The Amazing Transparent Man" as opposed to all the less imposing adjectives that might have been selected, you know this film is trying to hard to sell itself. This 1960 film is nowhere near as gloriously bad as "Plan 9 From Outer Space." The best thing you can say for this film is that it is clearly a prime candidate for MST3K. I mean, they did "The Amazing Colossal Man," so this should be up there on the list, right? The only reason to watch this film is to make fun of it, and that is pretty easy to do, so go ahead. This film gets too stars because it does not make you physical ill or provoke violent crime or mental instability.
Only the Terminally Bored Need Apply
The Amazing Transparent Man is a third-rate cop of the Invisible Man films. An ex-Army major with delusions of grandeur enlists the assistance of a renouned nuclear scientist and a notorious safecracker. His "sinister" plot"? To create an army of invisible soliders to conquer the world. He has the scientist (the only likeable character in the film) perfect an invisibility machine and the safecracker is his first human subject. After becoming invisible, the safecracker steals nuclear matter from a local armory to power the machine. The movie is more tepid melodrama than suspense. The major's scheme predictably begins to unravel, climaxed by a nuclear explosion in the laboratory. The most entertaining sequence is when the invisible safecracker makes a detour to the local bank for some "quick cash". During his heist, he suddenly begins to materialize! Unless you have money to burn, don't buy this title separately. If you must have it, purchased it on value- priced Diamond DVD with the companion feature "The Brain That Wouldn't Die" (which is much more entertaining).
