Customer Reviews of That Thing You Do! - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Worthwhile Extended Dip. When I noticed Tom Hank's complete absence from this so called Dir.Cut. I feared the worst. Thankfully this new version is mostly a success. With no major scenes added (Besides a funny cameo from Kevin Pollack) this 2 1/2hr cut is a much more layered film with worthy character development (the family back home and more Charlize Theron..surprise) and a lot more insight into the behind the scenes of 60' entertainment and the backstage life of a Rock&Roll band. The now classic anthem title track still manages to hold out for the duration of the film, a much better compliment than the original(TV Movie) score. With great wardrobe, set design, a quick pace, and sharp script by Hanks the movie really deserves it's now epic length. (ala Spartacus) <
> It's too bad Hanks hasn't directed since this one., he shows much more humanity and sensitivity towards his characters than more experienced directors.
Still a great movie!!
The extended cut was fun. I've seen this movie a ton of times, so the extra scenes messed with my mojo a bit, but i enjoyed them.

> But, and it's a really big but, No actor commentary. What happended to it? Anyone? Listed on here Amaz** and other places but not on disc.
A total joy! Buy It!
The new two-DVD edition of Tom Hanks' labor of love, THAT THING YOU DO, is well worth adding to your library. Not only does the film get the Director's Cut treatment, with the addition of a half hour of new material, but you also get a second disc with several backstage looks at the making of this wonderful film.

>And the extended cut is great! A lot more character development, explanation of plot points left unresolved in the original theatrical release, and so much more! It's obvious that all the material in this new edition was in the original story and script, but when you go to final cut, inevitably some material has to get left behind. That's what is so great about DVDs: you get to see what the original intent of the director was, and decide for yourself.

>And the film itself brings to life the early Sixties and the joy of being in a garage band that grabs the brass ring. The scene of the Wonders band members exploding when their song is on the radio for the first time is priceless.

<
>And check out the Easter Egg on the disc with the feature (Disc One): in the bottom right corner is a speed dial, just like an actual record player, and if you click on 33, you'll hear the title track just like a slowed-down 45, and if you click on 78. . .it's the Chipmunks!
