Customer Reviews of Tenchi Universe 5 (Japanimation) / Subtitled & TV
Highspeed Hilarity in Outer Space... I was first introduced to this series on Cartoon Network's TOONAMI block, and loved the stories and the characters that filled them. Still, when you watch the videos as opposed to the television versions, you see all that they had to remove to keep it accessible for all. In ways, this is unfortunate, since you would be missing Ryoko's hilarious karaoke sequence, as well as her massive drinking bout in Ayeka's pub, if you only watched the edited version. Little details like that are all a part of Tenchi Muyo's charm, and deserve their place there. This volume takes place right after the climactic battle between Ryoko and Nagi. It seems that the planet Jurai has a new emperor, and he is bent on capturing Ayeka who he has decreed to be a traitor. Calling in the Jurai military forces, she is captured along with Ryoko and Sasami, who are to be taken back to Jurai to face trial. Of course, Tenchi and his friends go after them, and manage to free them with the aid of one of Washu's fabulous inventions(and, let's not forget, Ryo-ohki's ability to turn into a spaceship). They then have to go into hiding, not only from Jurai's emperor, but from the bounty hunter Nagi, who will stop at nothing to capture Ryoko. The volume also includes Kiyone and Mihoshi's return to GP Headquarters, as well as their escape and rendezvous with the rest of the gang. The highlight of the volume is "No Need For Hiding", in which Tenchi's extended family have to go into the bar business to make enough money to get to planet Jurai. Nagi's reaction over her bill is hilarious, as well as the karaoke sequence with all of the characters. This is a great start to one of the better storylines in the Tenchi Universe saga. It was close, but I had to give it four stars because of episode sixteen, which has the tendency to drag a bit. Other than that, it's a worthy addition to anyone's collection. You won't be disappointed.
