Customer Reviews of Tenchi Muyo Ova - Volume 4
I'll Have the Special! Episode 7 is supposed to be the final episode of the first OVA series (1-7) but since the first episode of the "infinity" series starts on episode 8 and ends on 13, I do not consider these two universes, but one OVA series consisting of episodes 1-13 and that's how most everyone sees it anyways. So, Episode 7 has Ryoko and Ayeka fighting over Tenchi again and this time, Mihoshi leaves for the Galaxy Police. This was a trick by Ryoko to get Mihoshi out of the picture and to eliminate her as a candidate for Tenchi's love. While Ryoko just wants to sleep with Tenchi, Ayeka's objective is to stop her at all costs. This episode is to good to miss. Out of everything that is Tenchi Muyo, this is my favorite! This Video also includes the Mihoshi special. For some Reason, they didn't include this special on the Tenchi Muyo Ultimate OVA DVD. You can only get it on this tape so buy it now and have it in your collection! The Mihoshi special is about Mihoshi telling a story from one of her galaxy police missions. It's mainly about Ryoko and Washu in a crime operation of stealing ultra energy matter with Mihoshi and Kiyone being hired by Ayeka to capture Ryoko for stealing Tenchi away who is also a GP officer. Later When Pretty Sammy comes around, things get more interesting. I like the ending music of the Pretty Sammy Theme. It sounds best in japanese but the english version is alright. I say buy this video now because of "the night before the carnival" (my favorite) and Just so you can have a copy of the Mihoshi special since it's not even on the DVD That costs 83 Bucks.
The battle with Kagato was just the beginning...
The fun continues with the ongoing adventures of Tenchi and co.! First, Ryoko tells Mihoshi the Galaxy Police want her to return to head quarters. (Not too hard convincing that ditz of anything-how'd she ever become a first-class detective, anyway?) Will Mihoshi be saying goodbye for good?
Next is the "Mihoshi Special" episode. It's not concidered an official part of the OAV series, but it should be. Mihoshi spends a hot summer afternoon telling her friends the story of how she and her partner Kiyone solved the crime of the stolen ultra-energy matter. (When Ryoko asks what that is, Mihoshi answers,"It's a matter that produces ultra-energy, of course!") Mihoshi, it seems, is unable to remember the exact details, so she casts her friends in her story in different roles-entierly against their will, of course. You can probably guess what most of them end up as. The best moment is when Sasami, in Mihoshi's story, turns into Magical Girl Pretty Sammy, and then she, along with her talking animal sidekick Ryo-ohki, go off to save the others. My only problem is the last scene in the show, apparently set in the real world of the Tenchi series, which shows Kiyone cursing Mihoshi. Kiyone is one of my favorite characters in the series, but still, it's hard for me to belive that she could still be alive after...well, you'll see. Still, this is a must-see for Tenchi fans.
Those interested may like to know that Magical Girl Pretty Sammy and the talking Ryo-ohki made another appearence in an episode of Tenchi Universe before getting their own series, and Kiyone became a regular on Tenchi Universe.
Excellent series
INTRODUCTION:
Although the Tenchi Muyo anime series became a massive hit in its native Japan and other neighboring nations, it was never fortunate enough to gain that kind of success in the United States. That's a real shame, because this is one of the best anime series out there. It DID air briefly in America on the Cartoon Network, but it never really won the audiences over the way series like Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z did. But this series is every bit as good as the animes that DID achieve fame in America. Read on for my review of this set.
BASIC PLOT:
It's hard to describe this series because there are so many twists and turns in the plot, but I'll try my best. The story follows a young man named Tenchi Masaki, who has just returned to school from a long break. Soon enough, he meets up with a rather strange cast of characters, and discovers that he may be the last hope for saving the universe! To make things even more difficult for him, many of these strange characters he has met fall in love with him, and this creates some competition amongst them that results in some rather comical scenes.
SERIES OPINIONS:
Why is this series so underrated in America? This is one of the best animes out there. It combines the samurai-style action of Dragon Ball Z with the romance/slapstick humor stylings of Sailor Moon, and this creates a series that is universally appealing. And believe me, over time this series will grow on you.
THE DUB:
Surprisingly, the dub version of this series isn't that bad. A few scenes have been mistranslated or toned down for American audiences, but it's nothing major like with other animes. Here's a little tip, if you're curious about what has been changed - while you're watching the Japanese subtitled version of the DVD, hit the Audio button on your DVD remote and switch to the dub track. This way you can watch the English dub with the English subtitles for the Japanese version - there's no better way to see how different some of the translations are!
DVD:
Once again, DVDs featuring an uncut dub and an uncut sub have been released. This is great because you get both versions of the series. There are also some bonus features as well. There aren't a whole lot of bonuses, but at least there are some - a number of anime DVDs don't have any at all!
OVERALL:
Overall this is an excellent DVD set, and it's good to have all the episodes of this classic series on DVD at long last. Still, the DVDs could have been done a little better. If you're an anime fan, this is a strongly recommended release.
