Customer Reviews of Tai Mantis Kung Fu
Straight forward, Easy To learn This video (dispite haveing a new age theme) is a little rough(Cohen doesn't seam scripted at all) yet straight forward approach to learning the basics of this system. Cohen covers basic staces, blocks, take downs and more; first slowly telling how the waza(move) is preformed, then showing how he would preform them, (with out a partner and in a slow motion) then at full speed with an attacker. He seams to know what he is doeing and God bless him for helping the rest of us.
A few comments
This video is part of a two-volume set from Scott Cohen, covering Tai mantis self-defense techniques and applications.

>Apparently, Cohen worked in a mental hospital housing violent and criminal insane inmates, and is said to have shown these techniques therefore work in real world situations.

>The Tai mantis is a combination of 7-star and northern mantis styles. However, the 7-star system today is actually comprised of 50% classical 7-star, 30% mei hua chien or plum blossom mantis, and 20% guang dong or shiny board mantis, so the Tai mantis style is quite an eclectic system at this point.

>BTW, one other interesting piece of trivia about Tai mantis. A Tai mantis master, Kam Yuen, was the original advisor for the Kung Fu TV series. Actually, I had heard that a jiu-jitsu master had initially been retained! :-) Then someone suggested that since the show was about kung fu, how about getting a kung fu master instead? :-)

>But getting back to the videos. Cohen presents many practical self-defense combinations in these two videos derived from this style. The defenses include blocking and parring, strikes and punching, and takedowns and finishing techniques. One of the forms is presented, and then the applications are drawn from the form.

>One thing I noticed is that hair grabs are frequently used in the takedowns. Cohen comments on this in the video, which is common in Tai mantis compared to other styles. Cohen presents dozens of techniques and combinations for different attacks and situations, so the video contains a good deal of information, and is a good value for the money.
