Customer Reviews of Swordsman (1992) / Movie
DISAPPOINTING MIX OF CRIME, REINCARNATION, AND SWORDFIGHTING Alright, not many people would expect much from such a movie starring Lorenxo Lamas in the first place. If that's how you feel this isn't disappointing at all.
The story is some cobbled-together hokum about a cop who has dreams about a swordfight in togas, wins fencing tournaments, and can see through the eyes of a dead person the last seconds of his life by touching his blood. A series of sword-inflicted murders leads our hero to investigate an underground fencing tournament where wealthy people dressed in black bet discreetly. There's also something in there about the sword of Alexander the Great in a museum, the boss of this fencing ring believing he is the reincarnation of Alexander, and a beautiful female museum researcher (the hero's love interest).
The crime story follows all of the psychic/undercover cop cliches (the skeptical chief, the partner who gets murdered, the shrink who tries to help him, the villain who senses his gift, infiltrating the ring and gaining the trust of the boss, etc.), giving no real surprises and by the end the payoff twist is kind of confusing, yet ho-hum.
The swordfighting is taken seriously. In a moody, darkly atmospheric, basement-like setting, a tuxedo-clad announcer describes how guns are toys and fists are for brutes but only swords are for gentlemen. Most of the combat is with rapiers, but there is also some sabre and broadsword fighting. The moves and speed of the fights look convincing and Lorenzo's martial arts skill gets a decent workout.
It's really not worth saying much more about this film. The fights are decent, the rest is pretty lame. The "sword of Alexander" in the film is actually based on a medieval sword, not ancient greek, and the sword that fights against it in the dream/flashbacks is a Viking sword. The sword on the box (which it based on the traditional "sword of Charlemagne") never appears in the movie. This movie is followed by a sequel:"Swordsman II: Gladiator Cop" See my review for it there.
