Contemporary Christian music artists Switchfoot play a vigorous concert for an enthusiastic hometown audience on Live in San Diego. While eschewing overt references to faith in Christ, songwriter and frontman Jonathan Foreman repeatedly exhorts fans to take control of their lives and become more serious people. Ironically, Switchfoot could embrace that same advice when it comes to their music, which is too safe (same tempo, same vocal on everything) and diffuse to make the impact the band could make if it tried. The potential is there, in "This Is Your Life"'s jangly, orchestral feel, in the Replacements-like wit and woosh of "Gone," the dense, deliberative pop of "Learning to Breathe," and the unapologetic rock of "Meant to Live." --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews of Switchfoot - Live in San Diego (Jewel Case)

....the point of a live album is the crowd - don't mute them out!
The point of getting a live DVD of Switchfoot as opposed to their perfected, mixed recordings is to hear the crowds complement the band's passionate music with THEIR energy, but the way the sound is mixed on this DVD makes Switchfoot seem like they're high on their music while the wild, jumping crowds you see in the background are just...silent. I always say that Switchfoot is a band meant to be seen live (you'll never hear their songs the same way again when you do), but, sadly, this DVD does not quite capture the energy they have when they perform for an audience. If you're still hung over from a live show, or want to see a bit of the real thing, bootlegs of their performances are available (...even official bootlegs!), and I believe those echo the energy of Switchfoot much better than this. I have all of the band's albums and I've seen them live twice (twice only because I was blown away by the first, which I actually almost did not go to because I thought the venue was a bit too far and not worth my energy--thank goodness I was wrong, because it turned out to be an experience of a lifetime), and even now I'm still certain I will continue to see them again and again and yet again in the future. Just not on this DVD.

The album is better than this DVD
I really enjoyed Switchfoot's CD "The Beautiful Letdown". It is ground breaking album for this up and coming band. Unfortunately, this DVD does not do the best job of representing the band's efforts. As others have noted the sound quality is not great, and the video footage does not capture much of the band's energy. Simply put - it is somewhat boring to watch. <

>On the positive side, the song list from the concert does include all the best songs from "The Beautiful Letdown". But, I was disappointed that there was not more extra material beyond the concert. There are a few short interviews, and a video, but nothing more. Therefore, I recommend that listeners stick with the CD, it is much better than this DVD.

Great, but Could Have Been A Bit Better
I liked this. I am a Switchfoot fan so I should. I did, however, find that the sound qualits wasn't all that great. It could have been louder. Also, Redemption wasn't in it. Redemption is one of their best songs. Sometimes the energy of the concert was great, sometimes it went down a little. I would reccomend this if your a huge fan, but if you just like the music, go for the CDs.
