Customer Reviews of Sweet Dark Demon
sweet release I was really imnpressed with this release....there is so much space yet so much texture to it. Willow's voice is something straight out of Mother Nature...raging, raw with engergy, whispering like rain, pure and sweet like sun. I love the bitter-sweetness of 'Keep Me This Way' and the crazy, maddening guitar work on 'Four Corners' and 'Scotch'.
Very sultry....angel of darkness...sweet and hopeful!
The Best Album I've Heard In The Last Ten Years
Every generation there appears on the scene a new album by an artist so seminal, so historically apt, that subsequent generations continue to admire and listen to the work with the same wonder and awe that inspired listeners when the album first premiered. Albums filled with the soul of the artist, with the moment frozen in time, yet alive with passion, fury, intensity, and resolve. Among such albums are John Coltranes' "A Love Supreme," John Lennons' "Plastic Ono Band," Neil Youngs' "Tonight's The Night," and Patti Smiths' "Horses."
Willows' "Sweet, Dark Demon" Joins this litany.
Here is a work of art that challenges the listeners attention with the very first song, challenges each of us to consider the strength of character and source of wonder that is expressed with the opening line of "give me a cigarette this rainy day, give me a blanket for the cold, give me a telephone for this quiet room, give me a cold drink for the heat." Or on "Down," where Willows' voice reaches the raw edge of fury that make singers like Jennifer Finch of L-7 or Kat Bjelland of Babes In Toyland sound theatrical and forced. And with "Eastlake Bridge," where Willow whispers with death, flirts with suicide and finds solace in the city skyline and you hear the depth of her soul. Or "Skinny girl," a song that expresses independence and self-acceptance with a sensuousness and passion that almost belies the conflict that is at the source of the songs origin.
With a dark, midnight voice capable of a soft whisper or an intense growl, Willows' singing is near perfect. Her sense of melody carries the strong lyrical strength that is at the heart of Willows' music. There is a powerful linear quality to her songs. There will be no traveling in circles here, but a deliberate journey instead. Whether singing alone accompanied only by herself on acoustic guitar, or when accompanied by her full band, as she is on this album, Willow is an artist and musician of undeniable wit, character, and astonishing self-honesty. I can only look forward to future endeavors and thank her for sharing this brilliant moment in time from her life.
This is an essential album.
Didn't impress me...
I'd read some favorable reviews of this CD and decided to pick it up. After several listenings I can't say that I'm disappointed but I'm not impressed either. The impression that sticks with me is of Natalie Merchant singing Tori Amos songs. The CD could probably have benefitted from a different producer. All the tracks sort of run together and sound more alike than different.
