Customer Reviews of Swedenhielms
Another psychological character study from Sweden's Molander Ingrid Bergman has a minor role in "Swedenhielms," a 1935 film directed by Gustaf Molander, who would later use her in starring roles. Rolf Swedenhielm (Gosta Ekman) is a Swedish scientist who is so busy doing his research that his family and finances suffer for his dedication. His Sister-in-Law Marta Boman (Karin Swanstrom) has been raising his now grown children. One of them, Bo (Hakan Westergren), is engaged to Astrid (Bergman), but because she has money and his prospects are dim, he is too proud to actually marry her although Astrid has no problems with the situation. But then Eriksson (Sigurd Wallen), a long time enemy of Swendenhielm, claims he has a promissory note from the scientist on which his signature is forged, supposedly by Bo. This is so horrible a charge that Swendenhielm is going to refuse the Nobel Prize because of it the impending scandal. If this sounds a lot like "A Doll's House," you are correct, but this Swedish film (with English sub-titles) has a much happier ending than that classic play. Another one of Molander's psychological character studies that represents the realism of Swedish films during this period. "Swendenhielm" is one of eight of Bergman's Swedish films released by World Classics Cinema Collection.
