Customer Reviews of Surf
Nice album Surf is a good acoustic effort from Roddy Frame, well worth the purchase. The sound is calm and peaceful with pleasant lyrics and vocals. However, it does at times suffer from a sense of monotony. The tempo of the songs is remarkably similar throughout the cd, aside from a couple of more uptempo tracks "Abloom" and "High Class Music". Roddy's range seems fairly limited and at times his vocals dont quite do the job most notably in "Tough" where his inability to reach high notes is evident.
Overall, Surf is a nice album and well worth the purchase.
Roddy Never Sounded Better
Nearly twenty years after his Aztec Camera debut, High Land Hard Rain, Roddy Frame has never sounded better. His voice has matured well and it is spotlighted here as this collection features just Roddy and his guitar. No other instruments. The songs are achingly beautiful. And one song has the best line he's ever written: "When I was young the radio played just for me. It saved me."
Beautiful Music
I have been a fan of Roddy Frame for a long time. He first caught my attention as the lead singer and songwriter for Aztec Camera. I have almost all of AC/RF albums and this is one of my favorites. It's easy to get sick of an album but this one continues to stay in my CD player. The initial feeling may be that this is just an easy listening CD, kind of light hearted and fun. But somehow it captivates my attention each time I play it. Rather than just listening to it in the background, I often have to sit down and really listen to his music. Give it a spin. Frame really boils it down to the bare essentials with just his voice and guitare. Enjoy!
