Singer, who made a strong impression among comic-book fans for his work on the X-Men franchise and directed Spacey in The Usual Suspects, brings both a fresh eye and a sense of respect to the world's oldest superhero. He borrows John Williams's great theme music and Marlon Brando's voice as Jor-El, and the story (penned by Singer's X-Men collaborators Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris) is a sort-of-sequel to the first two films in the franchise (choosing to ignore that the third and fourth movies ever happened). The humorous and romantic elements give the movie a heart, Singer's art-deco Metropolis is often breathtaking, and the special effects are elegant and spectacular, particularly an early airplane-disaster set-piece. Of the cast, Routh is excellent as the dual Superman/Clark, Spacey is both droll and vicious as Luthor, and Parker Posey gets the best lines as Luthor's moll Kitty. But at 23, Bosworth seems too young for the five-years-past-grizzled Lois. It's nice to see Noel Neill, Jack Larson (both from the classic Adventures of Superman TV series), and Eva Marie-Saint on the screen as well. Superman Returns is one of those projects that was in development for seemingly forever, but it was worth the wait -- it's the most enjoyable superhero movie since Spider-Man 2 and The Incredibles. --David Horiuchi

What can be said? It's Superman all over again <
>Plot Synopsis: <

>The famed man of steel returns to Earth after having been absent for five years in a search for exploded Krypton. Upon his return he finds his old flame, Lois Lane, now has a fiancée and a son to boot. Meanwhile, Lex Luther is at it again with plans to build his own continent out of crystals stolen from the Fortress of Solitude. The ritualistic battle between good and evil ensues with Superman eventually coming out on top. <

>This is not a bad movie as some would indicate, but is by no means a great one. There are many pluses and minuses throughout the film. First of all, this, less even than the other films, is not true to the DC comic's character at all. It is a world that the scriptwriter made, not DC comics. Second, the film covered old ground of Kent growing up and confuses us somewhat. Is this supposed to be a sequel or a remake of the original 1978 film? Third, Lex Luther is again portrayed but does not act as the comic version did - besides, why all the infatuation with Luther? The comics Superman had other villains such as Brainiac. I, for one, would like to see some variety here. Fourth, same old tired sequences of Lois and Superman flying together. C'mon screen writers ... the comics Superman had three (count `em, three) girlfriends and was not this hung up on Lois Lane. <

>And by the way, Let's get the Fortress of Solitude right. In the Superman dogma it is a mountain cavern in the far north with a huge key disguised as an airline marker. No crystalline structure at all. It was more like the Batcave in that it housed Superman's trophies, momento's and the shrunken city of Kandor. I hate the bastardization of the comics I loved as a kid. With today's CGI effects, we can duplicate anything we saw in the comics. The phantom zone for instance (it did not look like someone trapped in a plate of glass .. convicts lived in the real world but could not touch or influence it). <

>Yes, there is some positive here. The film is dark - much darker than any of the other previous chapters. The photography is more compelling thanks to advances in technology. Brandon as a choice for casting is a good one in that we don't have to get used to a different looking Superman/Clark Kent - but he's a little more wooden than Chris Reeves was. Kevin Spacey is good as Lex, but as I said, it's time for a new villain. <

>Technically speaking, there is nothing to find fault with the dvd. The visual is crisp and clear, the audio track superb. Lots of extras on the disk itself. <

Far Better Than I Was Told
I had read many reviews about this film and decided not to see it in the theatres. My mistake. This was a very good film and story line. It may have dragged initially but once it got going it flew(sorry for the pun). There is much action and great special effects. I really liked the plot and how it doesn't try to retell the same story but takes off on the fact we all know who Superman is but he has just been away..

> I want to keep this short so let me say I am looking forward to the sequel to this one..The cast by the way is very good including the title role of Superman by a new comer Brandon Routh..I must add there is not a fully wholesome plot that includes a out of wedlock twist..enough said..
I guess I just had fun with this one!
Regardless of what others write about this movie, I loved it and know that my kids will too. Superman is portrayed much more like his comic book counterpart, an other world alien desiring to live life as a human, but knowing that his tour in this world is larger than his own desire.

>Superman is viewed a little darker than the super hero brought to life by Christopher Reeve (a character we all loved) by newcomer Brandon Routh. The story begins a little awkwardly with Superman's return to Earth after a five year hiatus. But movie watchers quickly learn why he left and also learn of another secret kept by Lois (Kate Bosworth), presumably from the last of the Reeves portrayals of Superman.

>The "new" Superman's costum is much more like that of the comic book hero; his cape appears to be made of a rubbery type of material giving it a more cartoon-ish look, as well as his boots being "squared" much like the brogans shown in the DC comics.
