Director Donner and creative consultant Tom Mankiewicz have a jolly good time revisiting their past on the commentary track. You get a clearer picture of who shot what, but the two have nothing good to say about Lester's edition. Donner doesn't go much into why he was dropped, just a difference of opinion and the need not to pay Brando. He also explains why the déjà vu ending of this edition was used in the first movie and a new ending would have been thought up for part 2. A quick featurette looks at how Michael Thau and a small crew reconstructed the film and compares several scenes from both versions. Also added are additional scenes shot by Donner but not used, most with Hackman. --Doug Thomas

Customer Reviews of Superman II - The Richard Donner Cut
Richard Donner's cut of Superman II is very cheap! Rchard Donner's cut of Superman II is very cheap! I was thinking that there would be a better version of Superman II by Richard Donner. I was very much mistaken. this movie is cheap! The original Theatrical cut of Superman II is far Superior than this one! The editing in this movie was poorly done. there are some scenes were the talking is too long and boring. Also the funnny sense of humor and spirit of Superman II is missing in this movie. I like Richard Lester's version because it was more pleaseing to Children. There is some humor in this movie but the movie is not fun. It gets dull and boring at the end. the Scenes with Clark and Lois and the Niagra Falls Hotel are good but that's about it. the Scenes with Clark telling Jor-El that he needs his powers back is not as affective as way Richard Lester had done these scenes with Kal-El and his mother. I think Richard Donner's version is missing some great action scenes that made Superman II more exciting. This DVD movie is okay but It's not as good as Richard Lester's Version of Superman II. I suggest to skip this DVD and get the original Theatrical cut of Superman II which is far more superior! D
I long "special feature" film
I was disappointed basically because of all the hype. The "film" did not meet expectations, nor was it better than the theactrical release. Hoever, I did enjoy viewing it in the manner I enjoy watching alternate/deleted scenes/endings given as special features with other movies. In the end, however, that's all it was for me.
A must see but not better than Lester's version
This is a very good movie and if you loved the Lester version you definately need to see it. However i do not feel it is a better film that the Lester version. The word is that Donner only got to shoot about 70% of his version of 2. So had he been allowed to shoot his other 30% some of the problems that i have with this version might have been cleared up. Spoilers coming so be forewarned. In the Donner cut the 3 villains actually escape from the phantom zone as a result of one of the missles that Superman hurled into space at the end of Superman the movie. It is a good opening to the film however what had to be sacrificed was one of my favorite Superman movie moments ever. In Lesters version when Clark finds out about Lois being at the Eifel tower and the bomb he races off to that back alley turns in to Superman and flies off to save her. I love that moment always have. Since in Lesters version the bomb at the Eifel tower is what frees the villains it had to be cut though. There are all sorts of changes in terms of how Lois finds out about Clark being Superman, some good some bad. The good is a scene where she literally throws herself out a window so confidant that Clark is Superman and he will save her. The bad is a scene where she fires a gun at him as a means of trying to get him to reveal himself. The scene was very well written but they had to use the test screenings for Reeve and Kidder because Donner did not actually get to shoot that scene. Donner blended in the 2 test screening shot far very apart as one big scene. You see Reeve going through radical physical changes in the scene, he has long hair, then short, he is buff then skinny it is very distracting. The biggest changes are that all the Brando Jor-EL footage was restored to the film. The producers cut it all out of Lesters version to avoid paying Brando his huge fee of about 3 mil i heard. Most of the scenes with Reeve and Brando are great especially when he goes back to the fortress to reclaim his powers. However i did miss the scenes in Lesters version with his mother Lara, played wonderfully by Susannah York. I thought in Lesters version when he is telling his mother of his feelings for Lois it came off as more believable. In the Donner cut it is more of an angry defiant exchange between father and son, i did not feel it played as well. The end is the same as Superman 1, in that he turns back time to make Lois forget about what happened. Supposedly that was the orginal ending to 2 all along but they changed it to the ending in 1 at the last minute. I personally feel that if you could combine all the elements of the 2 versions you would have the best superhero movie ever on your hands. So basically i feel if you loved the Lester version it is a must see but i do not feel it is a better film.
