Customer Reviews of Super Furry Animals - Rings Around The World
surround sound to a new level super furry animals - often referred to as "the most sonically aware band playing today" - have put out a DVD that truly overwhelms the senses. Rolling Stone magazine called it "an information age Sgt. Pepper's" which is no small praise! with the fantastic music mixed in true surround, artistic and compelling videos, and a strong message throughout, this DVD will certainly entertain.
Paul McCartney has a cameo on the album, he does backing percussion by chewing carrots and celery during "receptacle for the respectable".
some of the viewpoints expressed in the videos are anti-political, anti-religious and in some cases there's a definite anti-american-capitalist bent. also the animated "(a) touch sensitive" is almost pornography, but certainly very exciting.
without question the coolest DVD in my collection. if you don't have 5.1, however, just buy the CD. most of the excellence of the DVD will be lost without the surround sound.
Gorgeous Album, Novel DVD
The Super Furry Animals explode on what amounts to their "Soft Bulletin." (Which was the Flaming Lips' "Sgt. Pepper" which was... ah, you get the idea...)
But what of the DVD that accompanies it?
Well, these videos vary in quality-To say the least.
The lesser videos are nothing more than a mediocre screen saver or a [weak] flash animation. A good portion of the rest involves stock footage. But they're all just a backdrop to the beautiful 5.1 mix of the CD which comes through gloriously. If you're the sort of person who'd spend [money] on a 5.1 Audio DVD ... this is for you. (The DTS was particularly amazing!) There are a few interesting videos in the mix... but the visuals are definitely playing second fiddle.
Unfortunately, this assortment does suffer from The Wall / ZooTV-syndrome. A poignant album becomes weighty with it's capital-M Messages when visuals go preachy. We showed up for the harmonies and we got goofy, propaganda. It's such an egotistical embarrasment when musicians start to fancy themselves philosophers and theologians. Ghandi never picked up a guitar and made us suffer through his concept album... ...
Fascinating take on great songs
This DVD is absolutely amazing. Each song from the album is represented by video done by a commisioned artists. Pete Fowler's "Monsters" pop up in the DVD as well as Ministry of Truth's "Run Christian Run" - perhaps the greatest video of all time. A brave offering of a DVD by a brave band. This DVD goes to show that anything this band releases is one step ahead of its musical peers. Even if you have no idea who this band is, buy this DVD. It's like nothing you have seen before.
