Customer Reviews of Such a Long Journey
Better than 'A Fine Balance' (...)A Fine Balance. However, I felt that the language of A Fine Balance was a little too sentimental, and the characters and situations a little too stereotyped for my enjoyment. Such a Long Journey is a more honest novel and its message is far more important today. It is about the clash of modernization and tradition in India. Modernizing forces throw off the lives of several Bombay residents living around the time of Indira Gandhi's infamous 'Emergency' era, although Mistry focuses particularly on the life of a Parsi man named Gustad Noble, and his family and friends. It is a wonderful read, and frankly, just as good and not as unnecessarily long as 'A Fine Balance.'
Such a Beautiful Read
Mistry is a modern author whose writing compares to author's of "the Great Books". Such a Long Journey gives a stunning idea of life during Indira Gandhi's reign. Besides the cultural lesson on India you receive from reading this book, you also come away with the struggles of loyalty a man faces with friendship and family. This book is not as engaging as A Fine Balance, but a wonderful read nonetheless.
Beautiful depiction of middle-class Bombay life
The story of a struggling Parsi family. Sound familiar? Mistry's prose is as excellent here as in A Fine Balance; but this is shorter and less tragic.
Oprah should have chosen this one, but the anti-Indira Gandhi stuff probably went a bit over her head =)
