Customer Reviews of Strauss: Orchestral Works
AMAZING!!! David Zinman delivers the goods once again! Those people that were enthralled by Zinman's spirited Beethoven cycle will once again be blown away by this new set of Strauss orchestral works, which I happen to have purchesed for the same price as his Beethoven cycle. This is an incredible bargain.
Having listened to mostly everything on these CDs, I can't say that I have a favorite. There are numerous soloists, all of which are brilliant. The last four songs are just beautiful. Melanie Diener has a wonderful voice. Equally as good was the oboe concerto, the romanze for cello, and the serenade for 13 wind instruments, the last two being among Strauss's early, innocent works.
Zinman's interpretations of the tone poems are among the greatest ever recorded, in my opinion. He draws out the different moods for each piece. Example: One of his best is Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, which he takes at a steady but blazingly rapid tempo akin to Strauss's intructions. The mood is lighthearted, comical, and adventurous. However, immediately following is Thus Spoke Zarathustra, a totally different piece of music. Zinman draws out the seriousness, the warmth, and the largeness of the piece. The introduction gave me goosebumps. It is absolutely enthralling to listen to. The difference between Zinman and other interpreters of Strauss is that other conductors tend to focus on the big picture too much and mix moods of some tone poems with others. I have Till and Zarathustra with Solti and the Berlin Philharmonic. Although it is a good performance, the two tone poems sound much more like each other than when Zinman conducts. Each tone poem must be interpreted only by itself, discarding all other influences and focusing only on the music at hand. Zinman has mastered this in his Strauss. He grasps the concept of it all. Not only has he applied this technique within Strauss, but also to any two different composers; if you think this set will sound like Beethoven, you are wrong. This sounds like Strauss and Strauss only.
The Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra responds amazingly to Zinman's demands, and they play with the same energy as they always do. Indeed, they are one of the world's best orchestras.
The sound is excellent---very clear and minimal. It's hard to top Arte Nova. They are almost up to par with London's sound.
If you seek Strauss, you have found Strauss. Seek no further.
