Review: John Carpenter directing a romance? Yes it is true one of the signs of the apocalypse has come to pass. Widow Karen Allen can't get over the death of her husband, but when a visiting alien takes his form (Jeff Bridges) they must flee government agents who are desperate to catch the alien. This film is sweet, funny, and yes an enjoyable chick flick. (Hm is that the second sign of the apocalypse?) As for the cast they are all fantastic. I bought every performance. Karen Allen and Jeff Bridges give the performances of their lives wow! Carpenter directs his chick flick with unbelievable style. This is just further proof Carpenter is the greatest director of all time. As for the DVD? Get off your rears Columbia/Tri Star and go make my special Edition of this and "Vampires" NOW!
Perhaps the most awe inspiring and humanly sensitive movie
Though made almost 20 years ago, this incredible movie never fails to move me every time I view it. John Carpenter has shown his multi talents and ability to create a masterpiece outside of his traditional genre and the stars Karen Allen and Jeff Bridges gave Oscar-deserving performances (at least the community had the smarts to nominate Bridges for Best Actor). A somewhat implausable theme of an alien visitor assuming the body of a deceased man allows Bridges to enchant his audience with his "becoming human". His teacher (Ms Allen) exemplifies the purity of the true human spirit in all of its kindness and truth. Starman is able to appreciate the purity of spirit and in the supporting cast we see our foibles mixed with what makes humankind so special in it's purest form. This is a love story that transcends all others and a masterpiece that might make you feel good about being a member of the human race...Bridges sums it up when comparing humans to other life forms he has observed in the universe with "what makes humans different is... that you are at your very best when things are at their worst" So true...so thought provoking! We owe Ms. Allen's Jenny Hayden character much thanks for showing us at our best and Mr. Bridges for showing us how to acknowledge the heart and grow to feel human love.
A Bothered Fan of The Film.
Carpenter is a director with great highs and lows in his career. Who has managed to make special editions for just about everyone one of his movies except this one. Recently I just read Christine (The killer car Movie!) is getting special edition treatment as opposed to this great family film. Long time Jeff Bridges fan I realized that he gives an oscar nominated performance here, so I wonder whats the deal. Why no Starman Special Edition or even Superbit it. this film deserves better treatment.
