Star Wars Starfighter is finally here, and, as expected, it serves up Wookiee-sized portions of action and adventure. Flying from either a first- or third-person perspective, players must fight their way through 14 sprawling missions that weave together the lives of three seemingly unrelated pilots. Set during the same time period as Star Wars: Episode I, the events in Starfighter parallel those of the movie, letting players participate in the conflict against the Trade Federation from a slightly skewed perspective.

Although the main missions can be completed in an afternoon, it can take weeks to earn the bronze, silver, and gold medals that unlock the game's bonuses. These include extra missions, a few two-player modes, and the ability to choose any ship for each mission (including Darth Maul's incredibly powerful Infiltrator).

Most of the missions are intense, involving efforts like racing through an enemy-infested canyon or defending a base against a ceaseless procession of droid air and ground forces. The game engine can throw an overwhelming number of 3-D objects on the screen at once--such as a mission where more than 50 hostile fighters swarm nearly a dozen large capital ships. The beauty of these large battles is mesmerizing, with lasers crisscrossing, massive explosions thundering all around, and constant radio chatter alerting players to new threats.

The controls for the various fighters and bombers are extremely basic, and combat is straightforward, but there is always so much going on at once that the game mechanics almost need to be simple. The only real drawbacks to the game are a few bugs that occasionally crop up and prevent us from completing missions, and the fact that planetary missions have a low "ceiling" that prevents us from climbing very high. Even with these faults, the game exceeded our expectations, and no arcade, action, or Star Wars fan with a PlayStation2 will want to miss it. --T. Byrl Baker

Best StarWars Fight Sim Yet!
I am a HUGE SW fan i have every flight sim since Xwing and this one is clearly the best! The graphis and gameplay options make it a truely awesome gaming experience! The video cut-scenes and storyline are thrilling! The cut-scenes are as close as they get to the real thing or perhaps EVEN BETER! The sound-effects also makes the expericence even more thrilling! And like the computer flight-sims you are given a command list for your wingmen. As you play through the game you will enounter beatufil maps from Nabbo to Space. The best part of the game is the last level where you take on the droid control ship orberting Nabbo. The graphis are out of this world! The main point of this game is to shoot suff up while you listen to StarWars music play. The bouns missions also give you a challenge to test yourself with. If your a Star Wars fan get this game you will not be dissapointed. If your not a Star Wars fan and dont have Playsation 2 what are you waiting for? Get a PS2 and get this game! And if your still not a Star Wars fan something is seriously something wrong with you. So click on the little icon that says "Add to Shopping Cart" right no and get this game! You will love it!!!!

It's No Rogue Squadron.
This is the first disappoint I've had with my PS2, so far. The graphics in Starfighter are good, but, more than anything else, they reminded me of how amazing Rogue Squadron's graphics were on the N64 a number of years ago. Another problem is the fact that the vehicles of Episode One are simply not as interesting (and, thus, as fun to fly) as those of the original trilogy. Additionally, the first three or four levels were down right boring and I was soon regretting my purchase.

The game does eventually pick up. There are some very cool levels which are both graphically stunning and a lot of fun to play. The use of both planet side and space battles is also a nice touch; something that was conspicuously missing from Rogue Squadron. The control is also top notch. While the graphics aren't is good as they could have been (it's the PS2, for cryin' out loud), the sound is top notch. The voice acting ranges from adequate to superb and the character's voices are actually somewhat unique (a rarity is Star Wars games). The cutscenes are also pretty impressive.

While I would recommend this game, my biggest peeve is that it's WAY too short. First off, the levels are too short. Often times, I found myself wishing that a level would have gone on for another five or ten minutes. This game is supposed to represent inter-stellar war, yet most of the battles could be completed in a couple of minutes. More than anything else, though, the entire experience is over way to quickly. It took me around five hours to complete all of the standard missions: on the same day I bought it. There need to be about twice as many levels as are found in this game; just as soon as things start to get interesting, they're over. Luckily, bonus levels and bonus ships do make the game last a little longer.

The most important aspect of this game is that, once you get past the first couple of levels, it is really a lot of fun (you get to issue orders to wingmen and everything), BUT, make no mistake, this game IS NO KILLER AP. I'd rent it before buying.

Star Wars Starfighter: My Review
I received this game as a gift for my birthday in November of 2001, along with METAL GEAR SOLID 2: SONS OF LIBERTY. I completed the first mission and quickly fell out of it. The game sat on my shelf, un-played, until November of 2003 - two full years later. The only reason that I picked it up again was so I could properly beat it and put it to bed once and for all. I had recently decided that I had to many incomplete games, and was refusing to purchase another until I had finished all of the ones that I had.

One thing is for sure, this game grew on me. I wasn't a fan of it in November of 2001, but I sure am now. Probably most comparable to STAR WARS: X-WING VS. TIE FIGHTER for the PC (which I love), this game features you piloting one of three characters on a variety of different missions on a variety of different worlds.

In game graphics are really good. Ships look very detailed and accurate to the specifications that the movies set forth. Controls are perfect - I've got no complaints.

While missions rarely are ever anything more than "Shoot a bunch of stationary objects while avoiding fire from various fighters", they always manage to be fun. They do, however, also manage to be frustrating at times. For one thing, you seem to be the only competent member of your squadron in the air at any given time. If you don't complete mission objectives, they won't get done. Asking for covering fire from teammates will help you very little, if at all. And despite always hearing your teammates cries for help, enemies tend to single you out pretty consistently and you are frequently bombarded by a large amount of laser fire, missiles, etc. This alone definitely hurts the final score.

Another thing that hurts the score is the length. While the game consists of fifteen missions, very few will take you more than one try to complete.

The story takes place around the events of STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE, and while it is better than the movie, it isn't anything to write home about. The introduction of the character works well enough (Character A's story will overlap with and serve as Character B's, effectively introducing the latter character), once it expands beyond that it tends to fall flat. Events come off as unmotivated, and above all confusing.

The presentation here is very high. From detailed level locations to John Williams' classic score, nothing here fails to impress.

All in all, I do believe that I should have given this game more of a chance two years ago. It was fun while it lasted (which wasn't very long), and it definitely made me want to go out and pick up STAR WARS: JEDI STARFIGHTER, which is something that I was totally against a few days prior to playing this game again.
