In the casting, there was a clear intent to differentiate the show from its predecessors. Genre stalwarts Tony Todd and James Earl Jones were considered for Commander Sisko before Avery Brooks. The one letdown at the time was that Michelle Forbes did not carry Ensign Ro across from The Next Generation, but when the explosive Nana Visitor defiantly slapped her hand on a console in the pilot episode, viewers knew they were in for a different crew dynamic. In fact, the two-part pilot show ("The Emissary") is largely responsible for DS9's early success. Mysterious, spiritual, claustrophobic, funny, and feisty, it remains the most attention-grabbing series opener (apart from the original series') the franchise has had. The first year may have relied on a few too many familiar faces--like Picard, Q, and Lwaxana Troi--but these were more than outweighed by refreshingly detailed explorations of cultures old and new (Trill, Bajoran, Cardassian, Ferengi). As it turned out, Deep Space Nine was the boldest venture into Roddenberry's galaxy that had been (or ever would be) seen. --Paul Tonks

Customer Reviews of Star Trek Deep Space Nine - The Complete First Season
Not a bad start I never watched this show while it was on television. I tried a few episodes here and there, but never watched it regularly. However, in my DVD television watching, having finished Star Trek: TNG, I decided to give the first season a chance. First, I must say this show got off to a better start than TNG. The characaters, are set pretty well, and the tone of the show is fairly strong. I liked the diffrent style of the show: nothing works right, the station is a cardassian vessel, the characters are not only not friends but in many cases don't like each other. This show is very interesting, and I like the political nature of the show. That being said, the first season does have many flaws. First, the show does not do a whole lot of entertaining things. Here, they have access to species 70,000 light years away, and all the races feel mainly like more of the same. Odo is very interesting but little exploration of his character. Also, the show attemptes a little too hard to rely on TNG characters. Q and Luwaxana Troi felt out of their element. That being said, I very much enjoyed the show. I liked the exploration of the Ferengi culture, and feeling of the show getting better as the season progressed. I liked the show, and have purchased the second season, looking foreward to see where the show goes.
The start to the most epic Star Trek series ever.
Deep Space Nine is by far my favorite series in the Star Trek franchise. Part of it comes from the most interesting cast of characters, from it's tormented Commander Sisko to the fiery ex-terrorist turned liason officer Kira Nerys. Station security is covered by Odo, a shape shifting alien. And many other characters that make each episode fascinating.

>Another thing that sets this series apart from other Treks is that it has large continuing threads that span most or all of the series. While this first season doesn't even mention what fans would later know as the Dominion, it does give us a gateway to the other side of the galaxy which eventually leads to that arc. And the major arc of Benjamin Sisko's destiny begins right with "Emmissary," the excellent 2 hour series premiere.

>This season has fewer memorable episodes than later seasons, with forgettable ones like "Move Along Home" taking up a lot of space. But it does have it's moments. The previously mentioned pilot episode "Emmissary" is the finest series premiere in the franchise. Near the end of the season we have "Duet" one of my favorite episodes of dramatic television ever and is a major step toward the character growth of Kira. Then the season ends with "In The Hands of the Prophets" a nice politics/religion story about the clash of 2 very different cultures present on the staion that nicely sets up season two's opening arc.

>Extra's on this set are very nice. Several featurettes on the making of the series as well as an in depth interview with Nana Visitor, the actress who plays Kira. There are also ten hidden short featurettes on the final disk. Can you find them all?

The start of something great...
I love Star Trek (in most of it's incarnations) and easily loved Deep Space Nine the best. This is the start of a wonderful series, with awesome characters and stories. I think one of the things I like best about this series, is that it takes place in a fixed location. And in setting the story on a space station, you get to know the place and all its inhabitants better. There is room for development of not just primary characters, and that I think is what makes this series so good.
