Star Trek, as a license, hasn't fared particularly well in gaming. Fans have sky-high standards and Paramount Studios is often too restrictive on the developer's creativity, resulting in some very bad Trek games over the years. But things have changed. Voyager: Elite Force, Klingon Academy, and Starfleet Command proved that Trek games can not only be good, they can be great. Deep Space Nine: The Fallen continues the winning streak with a great game experience presented in true Trek style.

Deep Space Nine: The Fallen contains three interrelated stories that tell a larger tale. On the titular space station--back when it was under the control of the sinister Cardassians--an experiment went awry. Later, Sisko and the crew find the remnants of the laboratory and experiment. As if on cue, a Bajoran religious figure comes forward and the Cardassians return to make trouble. It's a story worthy of the canceled series, but what's important is how it's told.

Alternatively, you play as Major Kira, Captain Sisko, and everyone's favorite grumpy Klingon, Worf. Each story is connected in that, as Sisko, you might need to have a power grid disabled. In Kira's version of the same chapter, she may be the one disabling that grid for the Captain. You can play each chapter three times, and while they all might end in the same place (chapter one ends in the Captain's quarters for example), they feature the characters doing different things in different places. It's a well-done storytelling device that allows players to uncover the plot with the character that suits his or her individual playing style.

Another plus is that the game's obstacles can be overcome through means other than a fully charged phaser; players can also use the tricorder (by scanning shield frequencies, etc.) or the communicator (calling Dax and O'Brien for a few tips). Naturally, phasers and other Trek weaponry do come into play during combat sequences. All the Trek gear benefits from the excellent game graphics, sound, and controls, as well as the dramatic over-the-shoulder camera perspective.

The Fallen has almost everything going for it, but it should be mentioned that Avery Brooks doesn't voice the captain here, which may be hard to take for some die-hard fans (the other characters are voiced by their actors). Look at it this way: if you miss the series, here's your chance to star. --Bob Andrews

Customer Reviews of Star Trek Deep Space Nine: The Fallen (Mac)

Deep Space Nine: The Fallen (A Review )
Deep Space Nine :The Fallen is one of the greatest Star Trek games to be released on the mac (on par with Elite Force). It has an atmospheric plot, realistic graphics and great gameplay.
The Fallen revolves around the discovery of some Bajoran Orbs and it is your job as either Sisko,Worf or Kira to retrieve them before they fall into the hands of the Dominion,a strange Bajoran cult or the Cardassians. By having the choice of playing as one of three characters, you have different missions and locations.
The enemies are impressive ; ranging from the Grigari to Jem'Hadar. There is a good selection of weapons to choose from including phasers, shockblades and a Klingon Bat'leth.
The only gripes I have is that there is no multiplayer and the game sometimes quits itself after you complete a mission. It has heavy requirements but if you can fulfill them its a joy to behold.

Great Graphics, Good Play
Like everyone else, I have been waiting for a long time for this title to actually come out. The annoying trend of porting the PC version several months to a year after the PC release continues, but in this case, it's worth it.

The graphics are great on this and you get to play one of three DS9 characters: Sisko, Worf, or Kira. Depending on the level, you attack the same scenario from different angles or you're in different locations all together. Some of the non-player characters can be a little annoying (could have done a better job with Quark and when you're fighting forty-some Cardies and they're ALL screaming "For Cardassia!" every five seconds...) but the game play is really good. The biggest flaw is not getting Avery Brooks to voice Sisko, but if you can get over that, there really isn't much to complain about.

It's not quite a first-person shooter, like Doom and all that came after it, but it's not quite third-person either. There is some degree of your "find the key to open this door...repeat" action, but all in all, it's a good balance of shoot-'em up with problem solving.

I ordered 'The Fallen' a month ago and zipola
I ordered this on September 7 then reordered on the 18th. It is now October 10 and my account still says 'item(s) not yet shipped'. What I want to know is why does it say 'usually ships in 24 hours' in the product description? Hmm, hmm, tell me that. Well? I'm waiting....
