Richard Libertini is chilling as Akorem Laan, a 200-year-old poet/bigot cum Emissary who returns Bajor to life under a medieval caste system of D'jarras. Turns out according to her D'jarra, Major Kira is supposed to be an artist. Uh-huh. (Her flock of flightless "birds" alone is worth seeing.) Sisko fumes and watches not-so-helplessly as Bajor shoots itself in the foot. Cool visionary experiences. Weird wormhole alienation. Pivotal line: "You are of Bajor." This quiet, circumspect episode marks the turning point in the series. Its importance cannot be emphasized enough. The story line decided not only how the series would proceed but also how it would ultimately end. "Accession" belongs in every serious DS9 collection. --Kayla Rigney

Customer Reviews of Star Trek - Deep Space Nine, Episode 89: Accession
Sisko thought he would be happy not to be the Emissary... When a 200-year old Bajroan lightship emerges from the wormhole and its pilot, Akorem Laan, announces that he has is the Emissary from the Prophets, Captain Sisko is more than happy to give up the title. But when Akorem decides that the reason he had to wait to return for two centuries is because the Bajorans abandoned their rigid caste system during the Cardassian occupation, Sisko has some serious second thoughts, especially since this will end Bajor's chance to join the Federation. Meanwhile, Worf gets quite nervous when he learns Keiko O'Brien is again pregnant.
I have to admit I was surprised to learn of this ancient caste system on Bajor; it certainly seems like something Kai Winn would want to get back to if she already knew about it (maybe she belonged to a lowly caste). "Accession" represents yet another instance where DS9 comes up with a neat plot idea, Sisko replaced as Emissary, and instead of milking it for a few episodes deals with it in a single episode. Still, it is always fun to see the Prophets play mind games with Sisko, which makes "Accession" an above-average DS9 episode.
The Emissary returns
The wormhole opens and a Bajoran lightship emerges, old and battered, the pilot, Akorem, claims to "the Emissaey". The story centres around Sisko and his realisation of how much he loves his emissary status and that he muct compete with Akorem and reclaim his right as the representative of the Prophets. When Akorem returns to Bajor he revives some 300 year old traditions that force Kira to return home and instead of being a military officer she must become make clay birds - it's true. Akorem brings back a cast system where you are judged by your name and family history, not as individuals.
An engaging tale that ends well, but still the whole Bajoran-storyline is fare from the most interesting one Deep Space Nine has come up with!
