So much about "Past Tense" rings true--probably because the writers paid attention to details and even came up with unique slang. The guest cast was carefully chosen. Watch for Deborah Van Valkenburgh as the caring bureaucrat and Bill Smitrovich as Webb, the politicized man next door. Special kudos to Jim Military as the murderously touching Man in the Hat, and extra-special kudos to Clint Howard for his performance as a gentle, alien-fearing loony. (Howard also guest starred in the original series.) Note, too, how Dax's monochromatic period blazer visually references concentration camp uniforms. Just sublime. The delightfully silly B-story has Kira and O'Brien traveling back in time to rescue their crewmates. Cool nose bandage, even cooler temporal in-jokes, and a great line: "The name is Bell. Gabriel Bell." Make no mistake, though--"Past Tense" is a serious, action-packed morality tale. This two-parter is referenced several times throughout the remainder of the series and belongs in every DS9 collection. Know your history, DS9 fans. You never know when you might have to take action and save it. --Kayla Rigney

Traditional, but contains a meaningfull message Episode title: Past Tense, part II
Teleplay by: Robert Hewitt Wolfe & Rene Echevarria
Story by: Ira Steven Behr & Robert Hewitt Wolfe
Directed by: Jonathan Frakes
"Past Tense, part II" contains all the weaknesses of the first episode of this two-parter, but unlike that predecessor, it doesn't dwell on them.
This time, the story centeres around the sociopolitical aspects of the story, by the way of a traditional hostage drama. The use of that clich? as a driving fuel of the episode annoyes, but doesn't really damage the concept.
The biggest problems with this episode are the predictable nature of the story and especially the countless flaws of "Past Tense, part I", that made it probably the least beliavable trek episode ever.
It's follower doesn't stumble upon those weaknesses so obviously, however, as the focus of the story is kept at serious drama and strong interaction between admittedly two-dimensional additional characters and our familiar visitors from the future.
We get to follow the rescue operation of the lost-in-the-past crew members, and their attemts to keep history at it's right track.
The social questions the episode adresses are valid, and Avery Brooks' mild performance and even the Clich? filled ending can't ruin that.
Kira and O'Brien rescue Sisko, Dax and Bashir from 2024 A.D.
In the second part of "Past Tense" Sisko and Bashir are trying to make sure the Bell Riots go the way history records while Dax tries to find them in the Sanctuary District. Meanwhile, O'Brien and Kira are trying to figure out a way to bring the trio back from the past. Eventually they decide the best thing to do is to bring the Defiant to the year 2024 and rescue Sisko and the others that way (although first they visit the 1930s and the 1960s before they make it to the right time). I am as sick and tired of time travel episodes on Star Trek as the next person, but "Past Tense" has the advantage of dealing with a real issue, unemployment and homelessness in the early 21st Century, as opposed to Earth being taken over by the Borg or whatever. A nice performance from Avery Brooks as Sisko playing the role of Gabriel Bell, the hero of the riots. The problems of Kira and O'Brien provide some nice comic relief touches and I like the homage to "The City on the Edge of Forever."
Past Tense Part II
This is the conclusion episode which finds Sisko, Bashir (sp), and Dax in the past on Earth. Sisko has to 'adopt' the identity of a famous person in an attempt to preserve the timeline while the 'Defiant' in orbit and protected from the time shift attempts to find and rescue them.
The techno-babble explination for how the Defiant managed to not be erased when time was changed is weak as is the lucky way in which the three crew members were eventually found. However this does not detract from the over all story of this episode.
Features a guest appearance by a child actor from early in the ORIGINAL Star Trek (name/episode escapes me)
