Customer Reviews of Star Trek - Deep Space Nine, Episode 38: Profit and Loss
Garak finds a way to get back to Cardassia Three Cardassian dissidents arrive at Deep Space Nine in a damaged shuttle. To our great surprise it turns out that Professor Natima Lang and Quark not only once had a relationship that ended badly, but they still have feelings for each other. Meanwhile, Garak recognizes Lang and her pro-Democracy students and informs the Cardassian high command. When Odo refuses to arrest the trio as part of an impromptu prisoner exchange, Gul Toran makes Garak an offer: kill the dissidents and return to Cardassia. While I have a problem with the idea that Quark had a romantic relationship with a Cardassian female who wears clothes, watching Garak try to take advantage of the situation more than makes up for it. The result is that "Profit and Loss" comes out ahead by a few bars of gold pressed latinum.
Love - Cardassian Style?
This episode of Deep Space Nine is a potential favorite for fans of the Cardassian race, or die-hard DS9 romantics alike. I always thought it was never fully appreciated...
After all, we get a vouyeristic peek at the love life of our devilish resident Ferengi, Quark, through his encounter with his former Cardassian flame, Professor Natima Lang. We also learn just a little more (but not too much!) about the past political connections of our mysterious Cardassian tailor Garak...as well as what he considers to be the meaning of love. And although it was never love at first sight between Quark and Odo, we even see some early signs of a friendship between them blossom in this episode.
The supporting Cardassian characters -- dissident students Rekelen and Hogue, and Gul Toran provide additional insight into the political atmosphere on Cardassia, and offer a peek at the dangers of potential dissent in the face of military crackdown in that part of the Alpha Quadrant.
Overall, a lovely choice!
