Customer Reviews of Star City Baby
One of 2002's Ten Best.... Simply put, 'Star City Baby' is the best power-pop album since 1982's 'The Kids Are the Same' by Paul Collins' Beat. Mike Jarvis and his terrific band have made an album in which each and every song will stick in your head after a few listens. The strongest tracks -- 'Something in Your Eyes', 'Emily' and 'Do You Miss Me?' -- do what the early Beatles and the Byrds always did: provide hooks galore and catchy choruses with ringing guitars and propulsive beats. 'Do You Miss Me ?", in fact, could be a sequel to the Beatles' "This Boy". The harmonies and Jarvis' songwriting are top-notch throughout; the man has obviously studied and done his homework.
However, don't mistake this for a retro band. The Lackloves put forward their own stamp on what used to be the norm for pop-oriented rock 'n roll -- namely, to deliver plenty of melody and encapsulate what it feels like to be (relatively) young and passionate within three-to-four minute song structures. You'll hear plenty of reminders from the past, but you'll hear them within the context of a fine group of musicians with their own voice. In fact, the only criticism that can be made of this album is that, for someone who has seen them live, the production is a little too 'clean'; it smooths out their rough edges from performance. But it doesn't matter. 'Star City Baby' is a power-pop classic in this or any other year.
Melody is STILL alive!
Being 2003, I thought melody, harmony and overall musical craftmanship was long dead, but after one listen to this fine disc I am happily proven wrong! It's hard for me to even know where to start in describing this disc, but let me tell you you will be hard-pressed to find a better pop album in the last five or ten years, and believe me, I've listened to a LOT of POP music. Rap "music" has infested and destroyed (like an insidous disease) the music industry, and now there are few real artists that can truly carry the POP banner, save for bands that have a love for POP music and believe in what they do. Of course, you will never hear these artists on radio, because they don't appeal to baggy-bottomed, know-nothing suburban white kids and therefore, won't sell.
The Lackloves have an incredible knack for melody and you'll find yourself amazed at the quality of the songwriting. Like I was alluding to at the beginning, I really thought that melody had gone by the wayside to Rap and its beat-driven, non-musical nature, but The Lackloves reaffirm that POP music is alive and doing quite well, at least in the hearts of true musicians that won't sacrifice their principles for the bling-bling.
Now, to the songs. "Goodbye" has that classic 60's Mersey-styled pop vibe, with a little jangle tossed in. "Where Love Ain't Around" and "Love On The Phone" are prime examples of what I was getting at-perfect slices of pure POP with melodies that will stick in your brain LONG after that last MTV/BET Rap video that distorted your TV speakers when you channel-surfed.
In conclusion, if you are sick and tired of what has happened to music in the last 15 years and given up on expecting quality music, look no further than The Lackloves, you will not be disappointed.
overlooked gem of 2002
Man,what a great cd. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it is too short. I will say one thing if you are a fan of Roger McGuinn of The Byrds and his 12 string Rickenbacker then this is the cd for you. This cd is full of great songs and should have been on most everyones best of list for 2002.
