Customer Reviews of St. Elsewhere The Collector's Edition: Rain / Hearts
Learning to be a doctor is not exactly fun at Boston's St. Eligius Hospital One of the reasons that "St. Elsewhere" got off to such a solid start was that creators Joshua Brand and John Falsey had a hand in coming up with the stories for each episode. Writing the actual scripts usually went to somebody else, but the story credits seem to always be that writer along with Brand and Falsey. Set in a teaching hospital named St. Eligius (patron saint of goldsmiths and other metalworkers, so clearly the name was picked for how close it was to Elsewhere rather than theological reasons) in one of Boston's decaying South End neighborhoods, the series was originally described as "Hill Street Blues" in a hospital, which proved to be not only accurate but a great idea for a television show. Now if it would just come out on DVD instead of just having only the first season available on videotapes, of which this is the fifth volume in the collection: <

>Episode 9, "Rain" (Teleplay by Tom Fontana, Story by Tom Fontana, Joshua Brand, John Falsey, First Aired January 4, 1983), is just another day at St. Eligius, which means things are not going well for our young doctors. After being attack in the E.R. in a previous episode, Wayne Fiscus (Howie Mandel) encounters another gang member. Jack Morrison (David Morse) keeps doing house calls for an old man (George Morfogen), and is regretting being a nice guy. Victor Ehrlich (Ed Begley, Jr.) has Dr. Craig (William Daniels) all over his case for spraining his pinkie (this would be somewhat ironic given what happens to Dr. Craig down the road). Peter White (Terence Knox) feels helpless when his daughter eats some mothballs. Meanwhile, up in the psychiatric ward, Ralph (Richard Marcus) has started eating garbage (to be continued next week). <

>Episode 10, "Hearts" (Teleplay by John Masius, Story by John Masius, Joshua Brand, & John Falsey, First aired January 11, 1983) does a nice little homage to "One Flew Over Cuckoo's Nest" when Ralph starts impersonating a doctor (remember the scene where the patients are on a boat and are introduced as doctors?). Ben Samuels (David Birney) knows Dr. Nancy Paxton (Dorothy Fielding), who joins the staff at St. Eligius. Meanwhile, an overweight woman, Gina Barnett (Conchata Ferrell) shocks everybody by going into labor, and Ehrlich continues his downward slide when he faints during surgery with Dr. Craig.
