Customer Reviews of Spirit of '76
A nice spoof on the 70's! This movie features former 70's superstars David Cassidy and Leif Garrett which is perfect, since this motion picture takes place in 1976. I met Olivia D' Abo while I was being an extra in her T.V. movie with Henry Winkler called "Dad's Weekend Off." Cast features Redd Kross rockers Jeff and Steve McDonald and many cameos and special guest appearances by Carl, Rob and Lucas Reiner, Moon Unit Zappa, Tommy Chong, Julie Brown, Devo and lots more. A good film for disco fans, others will find it a total bore with it's low budget and acting, that makes it look like a dated movie of the 70's era, but however it was given a quick theatrical release in the United States! The movie's just as clever as the "Brady Bunch Movie."
"Spirit Of '76" gets 76 stars!
"What a fun-filled movie event. Boy, did this take me back, or what? Watching the film was a great trip through time for me. The appearances by such 70's luminaries as David Cassidy, Leif Garrett, Thomas Chong (of Cheech & Chong fame), Iron Eyes Cody, the rock group Devo and others insured us that we were in for a mighty good time. The songs that were used on the soundtrack provided the basis for the settings and the story. There was one discrepancy that I noticed, however; even though the movie takes place in 1976, the song "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps, used in the discoteque scene of the film, was not first released until December of 1977, when it made its debut on the soundtrack album to the 1977 movie "Saturday Night Fever". Nonetheless, this is a great movie, and will, no doubt, become a cult classic. If you want to have a fun time courtesy of an off-beat film, then this one is for you."
Ludicrous Nostalgia
This was a fun, but not perfect movie. If you grew up in the '70s it will definitely amuse you- if you didn't, well you may find it a bit silly but I don't think it will have the same punch.
A group of scientists sends a team back to retrieve "the Constitution" which has been lost. Only one man is old enough to remember it, and he's too senile to get the details straight. A malfunction sends the team to 1976 rather than their goal of 1776 and thus the premise of the movie. Will they find what they are looking for in the age of butterfly collars, the Carpenters and Grand Funk Railroad? Well I won't spoil the film by giving away the ending, but now you know the basic plot at least. If you are still not tempted to go out and see the movie, then it's probably not really for you. If on the other hand you are thinking, "Oh man, Grand Funk Railroad! I remember them!" then you may well find this movie very entertaining.
If you enjoy movies with the stereotypical pair of stoned (or stupid) teens ala "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure", "Dude, Where's My Car?", or "Dumb and Dumber", you may enjoy this film as well, even if you have no recollection of the '70s.
