Customer Reviews of Spiral
Spiral Spiral~ Vangelis is a tremendous example of what a trained musician can do with keyboards. Most people just play around with them, but Vangelis makes it into an art form that not many people can copy. 5/5.
The best use of sequencer arpeggios I've ever seen!
This album, released in 1977, is composed of only 5 tracks (although all of them last between 5 and 9 minutes aprox.) which shows Vangelis' mastrering of his then-trademark space sounds-jazzy and mythological-like tunes combination. It sounds more spacey than Albedo 0.39 (and better, in my opinion) mostly because it uses echoed sounds that sound great, like those heard on the arpeggiator sequence on the title track, Spiral. Talking about arpeggios, both the title track and the closing track, 3+3, show one of the best use of sequencers I've seen on my life. The most famous tracks here are Spiral and To the Unknown Man, (yet another) preliminary version of the infamous Chariots of Fire theme, although this one is remarkable because it doesn't feature the Chariots of Fire main theme at all, yet it's similar in structure. Ballad, the second track, is a planetarium song, pretty much like the Albedo 0.39 track, with a (sampled?) voice saying 'bim bam bim bam bum bum-bam' that sounds pretty weird. Dervish D is the craziest, most uptempo song on the album, it's hard to describe. Spiral is one of the few albums that you can listen without skipping any tracks, and is essential in any electronic music collection, unlike much of Vangelis' work.
Perfect Mood Music
This album promises to put you in whatever mood you may.
"Spiral" is a vicious nor'easter the size of The Perfect Storm, "Ballad" is wistful, "Dervish" is frenzied jazz, "Unknown Man" is a prelude to "Chariots of Fire", and "3+3" completes the set.
Companion to Albedo 0.39 for the Vangelis Starter Collection.
