Ultra-portable and extremely lightweight--at just 3.1 pounds--the Sony Vaio VGN-T350/L isn't just a pretty face. This mobile powerhouse features integrated wireless Wide Area Network (WAN) technology to keep you connected away from your workstation and a DVD+R Double Layer/DVD+-RW drive with Click to DVD software, enabling you to create high-quality, customized DVDs for presentations or home movies. The VGN-T350/L also features a 10.6-inch screen, 1.2 GHz Pentium M processor, 60 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (1 GB maximum), a battery life of between 4 and 9 hours, and a Memory Stick slot.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 60 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is becoming the average size for notebook PCs, providing enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and productivity software.
  • Processor: The Intel Pentium M Processor Ultra Low Voltage 753 (1.20 GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 400 MHz FSB) delivers outstanding mobile performance and low-power enhancements for sleeker, lighter notebook designs. The 1.2 GHz clock speed can be misleading--for most tasks, this processor will be faster than a 1.6 GHz Pentium 4-M. It sits at the top of the spectrum for this processor class (as of May 2005).
  • Memory: The VGN-T350/L has one memory slot and comes loaded with 512 MB of DDR SDRAM. You can load a maximum of 1 GB of RAM into the VGN-T350/L but the current memory module will need to be removed and replaced with a new module.
  • CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. For DVD-RW discs, it has a 4x write/2x rewrite speed, while for DVD+RW discs it has a 4x write/2.4x rewrite speed (DVDs are read at 8x). For double-layer DVD+R, it has a 2.4x write speed. For CDs, it has a 24x write/rewrite/read speed.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has an 82-key keyboard with 1.7mm stroke and 17mm pitch and an electrostatic touchpad.
Screen, Graphcs and Sound
The VGN-T350/L features an integrated video/graphics card in the Intel 855GME chipset, which features 64 MB of shared video RAM. The 10.6-inch LCD has a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels. It also has an integrated audio card and built-in sstereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The VGN-T350/L features Sony's SmartWi technology, which seamlessly integrates wireless Wide Area Network (WAN), 802.11b/g wireless LAN and Bluetooth technologies, enabling you to toggle among your wireless connectivity options depending on your surroundings. With the Bluetooth connectivity, you can communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones. You get a good offering of connectivity options, including both USB 2.0 and iLink (Firewire):

  • 2 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)
  • 1 headphone jack
  • 1 microphone jack
  • Memory Stick media slot, compatible with Memory Stick and Memory Stick Pro
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes loaded with a bevy of Sony multimedia software: Click to DVD (DVD creation), PictureGear Studio (digital photo), SonicStage (digital music), Vaio Media (network file sharing), and DVgate Plus (digital video). Other preloaded software includes Quicken 2005 New User Edition, Microsoft Works 8.0 (with word processing, spreadsheet, and calendar), Norton Internet Security (with 90-day subscription), Intervideo WinDVD, Sonic RecordNow, and SpySubtract.

Dimensions and Weight
Amazingly small and light, the VGN-T350/L weighs 3.1 pounds with standard battery and measures 10.7 x 1.34 x 8.1 inches (WxHxD).

Power
It's powered by the VGP-BPS3A lithium-ion rechargeable battery, which produces a battery life of between 4 and 9 hours.

Customer Review of Sony VAIO VGN-T350/L Notebook PC (Intel Pentium M Processor 753 (Centrino), 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, Dbl Layer DVD+R/DVD+/-RW Drives)
Did a lot of research and am 100% satisfied...
Quick rundown: <
> <
>This computer is perfect. I can see wi-fi networks almost 1/2 mile away (I do live in a high rise though). I haven't tested the EDGE network yet, but I heard that it can also be used on t-mobile for $20/mo instead of the plan they try to sell you. The monitor is amazing. The keyboard still has full size keytops, so it's a breeze to type on. <
> <
>I wish the usb ports were on the right side, not the left, so that connecting a mouse would make more sense. Same with the headphone/speaker jack, it should be on the right or left. The speakers are fine, but buy the altec lansing xt1 speakers - they're amazing. this computer is smaller than and as light as some magazines I read... it's amazing. The keyboard should light up too... I've always longed for a keyboard that lights up from underneath. Compared to any other laptop out there, this is it - I won't be looking for another one for a few years - thanks Sony! Oh, and battery life - I have got up to 9 hours 30 minutes on one charge, and that was with normal use!

Sony VAIO T350/l Rocks
The T350 series is being offered by Sony as an ultimate back-to-school accessory. If only such had been available when I was in school. For me it is the ultimate road warrior computer. It is as powerful as a desktop and keeps up nicely with a big HP bad boy laptop which was designed for performance, not battery life. In all respects, the small Sony is equal or better and it's just a joy to use. The keyboard reminds me of an Apple PowerBook keyboard. It is small which is normally a disadvantage but the sure, precise action makes it as easy to use as a desktop keyboard and easier than most laptops. <
> <
>The VAIO power management allows the user to stretch battery life or prioritize on performance and see the trade-off in graphic form. Set to keep everything active on battery I still get 7 hours on it with the WiFi turned on. Letting it shut down resources will stretch the battery even more. <
> <
>This computer burns DVDs and CDs like a desktop and backing up to the DVD drive is as fast as backing up to an external HDD. I had initial trouble writing to DVD+R media but I suspect it was bad media. I switched to cheaper DVD-R and have not had a single problem. <
> <
>The ports are fast and reliable. The telco and Ethernet ports are covered by ingenious, spring loaded doors which snap back into position when a cable is removed. <
> <
>While I bought this for use on the road I find myself using it at my desk just about every day. It's a cool computer, easy to transport and it works amazingly well. The previous review lists the hardware/software specs which I will not repeat. It's a great package and worth the PowerBook price. <

A product that shows the bleeding edge of technology
I bought the Sony Vaio T250L, the percursor to this model; the T350 series is the T250, but with the addition of 3G connectivity to the Bluetooth and WiFi. Every other spec is the same. <
> <
>I'm an ultralight fanatic. My first ultralight was a ThinkPad 560 series (which is still going strong today in a friend's good use); then a Fujitsu P1120 (smallest computer I ever owned), then an IBM Thinkpad X30 (anyone want to buy it :)); then a Fujitsu P2140, but only briefly (the right shift key is too small for me - I only use that key for shifting)... then finally what was, to be frank, an impulse purchase, the Vaio T250L. I was in Portland on a mini vacation, and happened to read the Fry's colour weekend ad in the local paper. Bam - there was the T250L for $200 off retail. As we all know, Sony products *rarely* are sold below Sony's directive pricing, so I decided to drive the 25 miles to the Fry's to check it out. Once I got there, I fell in love with the shape, size and functionality. I fooled around with it for a while, but even at $1999, I hesitated. Then the sales dude said they had an open box they could sell for $150 less ($1,750); still brand new - it was shipped via mail order, but the receiver refused the shipment - not even techically opened (but it had all the US Postal Service stickers on the box). <
> <
>So I jumped. Bought it. No regrets. But I do have a list of highlights and things I wish they'd make better or change. <
> <
>The Good Stuff: <
>- screen is stunning. Xbrite had me worried at first - it's so reflective, all mirror like, I thought it'd be hard to see in daylight. Nope. I've sat at outdoor cafes in midday sun and can read the screen. <
>- built in all media dvd burner - plus, minus, don't matter. Can't believe a 3lb wonder has a built in DVD! <
>- extended battery included. I've managed a seven hour session with this notebook so far on battery juice. Mind you, it was mostly writing for a day (Word!), which is low brain cell usage for the Pentium Centrino chip, and lo HD use, but sweeeeet. And man - I can't believe a 3lb wonder includes in that weight an extended battery! <
>- WiFi b/g and bluetooth built in. I know this is becoming more standard and centrino chips are wifi by default, but I still find it cool. <
>- Ports galore! Unlike the super sexy X505, all the ports are built into this model. <
>- Widescreen! Widescreen is the only way to go. And IMO, anything between 10.4 and 12.1 widescreen is perfect. <
>- Played two DVDs back to back on one battery charge. Now that's something. <
>- WiFi and BT can be turned off. Bonus for extra battery use. <
>- Keyboard layout is good - not as good as the Thinkpads of the world, but much better than the Fujitsus of the world. Ditto on the keyboard feel - it's no Thinkpad, but it's good. My typing speed on a thinkpad is about 95wpm. On the Sony, it's about 80 so far, and catching up. <
>- Looks. It's got it baybee. The dark blue / silver model is lush. <
>- DVD Buttons on the spindle are sweet, and useful. <
>- Touchpad - well, this will make my negative list (touchpads in general), but I do like how the right side of the touchpad is like a virtual scroll wheel. <
>- Firewire. I likey! <
>- Quiet - no fans... so quiet in fact that the DVD sounds louder than it really is when it spins up. <
>- And last, but not least - weight. 3 freakin' pounds. With a DVD Burner. It doesn't get better than this and still remain usable. <
> <
>All good stuff. But there's some things I wish Sony would fix / change / eliminate: <
> <
>- memorystick only slot built in. Sony. Sony. sony. Time to give up the pipe dream. The world doesn't own memory sticks. At the very least, it should have been a MMC / Smart Media / SD / Memory Stick multi device. <
>- Touchpads. I hate touchpads. I'm a speed and accuracy demon with pointer sticks (the lil' nubs in the middle of thinkpads and the mini fujitsus). You put a pointer stick on the x505 - why not on the T250/350? <
>- Sony... sony... sony! Time to ditch all that extra software you throw on the device, and just give us a CD with the extra crap to load if we want. And I swear, if I ever see another "install AOL now!" on my HD, I'm gonna scream. It took me a literal half a day just to uninstall all the useless crap Sony puts on these machines. Half of it is trialware that requires an uninstall anyway if you don't buy! Should I send a bill to Sony for my lost productivity time dealing with this? Hrmmm I smell a potential class action brewin! Just kidding - I'm Canadian. We don't do class actions much. <
>- No case? It's a unique computer. Sony you include nice slip cases for the X505, why not for the T2x and T3x series? <
> <
>Actually, there's not a helluva lot to complain about this bad boy. I personally think it's the best thing going in ultra portables today - nothing with a built in DVD burner is smaller and still usable. Change to a trackpoint, ditch the crap extra software, and enhance the card reader, and it's absolutely perfect. Right now, it's nearly perfect.
