Enjoy dynamic, full-force home-theater excitement with Sony's 120-watts-per-channel STR-DE997. The receiver accommodates everything from the latest surround-sound movie formats to cutting-edge high-resolution audio sources. The STR-DE997 delivers 120 watts per channel across 7 main channels (left, right, center, left/right mid surround, and left/right rear surround) and has a dedicated subwoofer output for an eighth (the ".1" low-frequency effects channel). You get everything from Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES/Neo:6 surround decoding to Dolby Pro Logic II processing (creating 5.1 channels from 2) and 5.1/7.1-channel analog inputs to handle music from Super Audio CD (SACD) and DVD-Audio.

You get conveniences, too, like multi-room outputs that come with independent source switching, so you can listen to a DVD in the living room while someone else is listening to a CD in the kitchen. The supplied Remote Commander learning LCD remote control comes preprogrammed for a range of devices, and it also learns new commands and has the ability to perform limited macro commands.

The receiver includes an FM/AM tuner with 30 station presets (20 FM, 10 AM) and a host of video inputs--5 composite-video, 3 S-video, and 2 component-video--to simplify switching between components and your television. Component-video upconversion from composite- and S-video sources improves upon the quality of your video inputs while simplifying connections with your component-video-capable television. Further, the receiver's actual component-video inputs accommodate wide-bandwidth (80 MHz) high-definition signals and work well with 480p signals such as those from progressive-scan DVD players, while composite-video inputs are upconverted to S-video quality.

A set of front-panel audio/video inputs includes an optical digital-audio input and facilitates spontaneous hookups with camcorders, gaming consoles, MP3 players, and minidisc player/recorders.

There's even a phono input for your once or future turntable--yes, they still make 'em, and yes, your vinyl will sound as good or better than ever. The unit's 3 stereo and 1 set of multichannel analog audio inputs simplify hookup of, for instance, a cassette deck, a VCR, and a high-resolution audio device that decodes formats like SACD and DVD-Audio. A total of 6 assignable digital-audio inputs (4 optical and 2 coaxial) accept bitstream feeds from DVD players, CD players, and other digital devices, while a single optical digital-audio out channels sound to a CD or minidisc recorder.

Digital Cinema Sound System is a group of exclusive Sony algorithms (the receiver offers 13 total) that represent a total re-thinking of home theater sound based on careful measurements of movie-production dubbing stages in Hollywood. Cinema Studio EX modes offer greater apparent distance from listener to screen and a full array of 10 additional virtual surround speakers.

Sound Field Link applies the last-selected sound field to an input whenever you select the input. For example, if you select STADIUM for the CD input, change to a different input, then return to CD, the receiver will automatically apply the STADIUM sound field.

Finally, Auto Channel Grouping helps integrate 5.1- and 6.1-channel programs with your 7.1-channel system. When a 5.1-channel mix is present, Auto Channel Grouping will route the discrete information for surround left/right directly to surround left/right outputs while adding a new surround back left/right channel. When 6.1-channel mix is detected, Auto Channel Grouping will route the discrete information for surround left/right directly to surround left/right output while the sixth channel is duplicated by both surround back channels (left/right).

Customer Reviews of Sony STR-DE997 7.1-Channel Audio/Video Receiver (120 Watts x 7)

Sony Struggles, but this 7.1 Has The Right Stuff
I recently replaced my Sony STR-DE925 5.1 receiver with this 7.1 unit. The two are vastly different, in terms of features and quality, but the 7.1 receiver has the right ingredients to make a quality home theatre system. <
> <
>The 997 is lacking in many features that past receivers like the 925 had, which is both good and bad. Sony seems to have streamlined this unit, taking away what they deemed unnecessary. This makes the unit less complicated for most people, but due to the lack of features, it is less customizable to the rest of us who are used to these features Sony offered in the past. <
> <
>For example, gone is the LFE (low frequency effect) adjustment. If your speakers can't handle subwoofer frequencies, the only recourse you have is to turn the bass levels way down. As well, 'Bass Boost' is gone, which again is both good and bad. Bass Boost was a great feature to raise the bass when listening to low volume movies & music. However, the true audiophile will appreciate the more true sound created without the ability to bump up the bass to unnatural levels. <
> <
>There are no crossover adjustments in this unit either. Most people wouldn't know where to begin adjusting crossover levels, so this is probably a good thing to eliminate. Unless of course, you're like me and want these extra features. <
> <
>Bass and Treble levels cannot be set to each individual speaker like the 925, or to each separate movie or music setting. They are universal, and thus, stay the same for every input on the receiver. Watching a movie with Bass +1 will mean Bass is +1 when you switch over to watch TV later. Again, less complicated for most people, but a pain in the butt for those of us who want the total customization we've come to expect from Sony. <
> <
>Some customization is still available, such as speaker distance, size, and surround speaker distance, size and height from listening position. <
> <
>However, they made a big mistake in removing the Optical input for DVD players. There are Fibre Optic inputs for TV, Satellite, Mini Disc/Tape, CD player, etc, but not for DVD. The only options are coaxial and component video, which is a real pain in the rear end if all you have is a very expensive optical cable, like me. One way around this is to route the DVD player through another Optical input, like TV/Sat, then route your TV signal through something else, such as Video 1, which is what I have done. <
> <
>The speaker terminals allow for banana-style plugs, but the back of the unit is quite flimsy compared to the 925. While pushing the plugs in, the back of the receiver will flex quite a bit, leading most people to question the quality of the unit. The old 925, on the other hand, is solid as a rock. <
> <
>But since you typically only have to plug your speakers in once, the seemingly flimsy rear panels and speaker terminals is a small price to pay for 840 discrete watts of power (120 watts x 7 channels) and very fast signal processing. I was impressed with the quickness that dts was decoded in particular. <
> <
>The most likely reason Sony pulled features was to save money, and make the unit less complicated. The money savings is appreciated, as it is definitely passed down to the consumer. <
> <
>~Conclusion~ <
>This receiver is by far the cheapest 7.1 dts/Dolby Digital unit on the market, and in Canada, it comes with a full 2-year warranty, which is double all other manufacturers. Some parts seem to be delicate, but with care, this unit should easily last until the next home theatre craze to strike. But due to its lack of typical Sony features, I can only give it * * * * out of five stars. <

Really good receiver
My only complaint with this receiver is it doesn't have an optical DVD input. It does have optical inputs, but not for DVD. I don't understand this, as most of Sony's DVD players have an optical digital out. <
> <
>That said, I was still able to hook it up through Video 1. The sound is excellent. Man, I love surround sound! <
> <
>The receiver was upgraded from the previous STR DE945. The 997 is much easier to use, in my opinion. The remote control has been improved 500%.

SONY STR-DE997 quality falls short in many areas!
I purchased the SONY STR-DE997 (110 watts X 7) on 13 Feb 2005 & returned same 18 Feb. 2005. SONY rates this equip. @ 110 watts X7, NOT 120 watts X 7 as I see some vendors @ Amazon do. Using 2 sets of BOSE (New) 161 model speakers as well as a Sony center speaker & 2 Sony satellite speakers, the volume alone @ best had to be set at nearly 89% on this new receiver. The LCD portion of the display(remote control) would NOT turn off. The back light (on the remote control) did however but Sony after too many hours of being switched to over a dozen associates and tech support folks were at a loss to explain why the LCD display would not go off (except by removing the AA batteries), which was out of the question given the complexity of programming their remote. This receiver would have been my 4th Sony receiver but alas it was by far the most substandard receiver I had ever owned and a lesson learned with a lot of time wasted. I have until this past week always been a Sony fanatic first with their televisions and then their receivers. Never a problem with the quality of either until I tried out the STR-DE997 and in one fell swoop; I am forever dubious of their AV/receivers. My focus now is finding a brand that I trust (A.V) which will take a lot of research and listening. My 1999 Sony AV receiver still is in excellent shape minus the 7.1 upgrade but I'd rather stay in the dark ages with Dolby 5.1 and have a kicking system than get stuck with an STR-DE997 which is an utter nightmare in comparison. I wouldn't even consider a FREE STR-DE997 after five days of torture and having to deal with the aloof attitudes of the folks @ Sony's "customer service" number. <
