Is high price a fatal error
This reviews goes to the long term health of the PS3 and if it is worth the investment. Ultimately the success of a system is determined by the size of the user base. It is the amount of software sales that drive the true profits of a system. My question is if Sony has committed a fatal error by assuming a base of 20 million plus people will spend 600.00 for a console. While the die hards will not have a problem, what about the fence sitters? I believe that question has been answered by simply going to your local Target. While there are no Wiis to be found, most Targets, Best Buys etc have several PS3s just sitting around. The fact that a system is so readily available so shortly after launch means that there is no longer the great demand and this is due to the price. Since the price includes a Blu Ray player and the PS3 games require Blu Ray discs, Sony has painted itself into a corner. It is already losing money and cannot create a non-blu ray version that will allow for a cut to 300 bucks. So, it appears that the decision to use the PS3 as a sort of trojan horse for Blu Ray may have doomed the PS3. I fear there wil not be the tens of millions willing to spend the big bucks when a simliar lower price system is already available. Had the PS3 not inlcuded Blu Ray and debuted at the same price as the XBOX 360, it would have been a huge success.
Good as a cheap alternative to play BD
At present 20GB PS3 should be regarded as a low-cost next gen optical disk player rather than a game system, as it is clear that there are more BD movie titles than PS3 game titles. As a BD player, I need to add that noise from the cooler fan is sometimes disturbing especially in a quiet scene. It is just like watching a DVD movie on a high-end PC for gamers in a quiet room. Sony needs to bring down the heat from the cell chip otherwise I guess the system may not be suitable for a serious cinema fan.
<
>For anyone that would like to have both BD and HDDVD capability to avoid the platform issue, PS3 may not be a good choice, as a BD-HDDVD dual player will be avialable soon and it will initially cost around $1200, which is less than buying two players independently.
<
>Net-net, I think PS3 is a product for heavy gamers and early BD adoptors. That said, Sony seems to be planning to introduce cheaper next version soon to solve the heat issue, which may change my opinion.
