Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the HT-V600DP stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Component-video outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.
The VCR's four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and the hi-fi-equipped VHS section records and plays back stereo audio tracks. You can schedule ahead using the recorder's one-year, eight-event programming.
The AV receiver decodes not only Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals, but Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Pro Logic II, as well. Dolby Pro Logic II generates 5.1 sound from any stereo source for enveloping simulated surround sound. An optical digital-audio input grants direct digital access to a satellite receiver, minidisc player, CD player, or other compatible device. The unit's FM/AM tuner offers 30 station presets: 20 for FM and 10 for AM.
The speakers are video shielded for distortion-free placement near (or, in the case of the center channel, on) your television. The center-channel speaker, which handles most dialogue and 70 percent of a movie's sound, is slightly larger than the four (left/right and surround left/right) other satellites, and the bass-reflex subwoofer uses a large, eight-inch woofer for delivering the powerful low-frequency effects for which it was designed. Speakers too loud? A .25-inch headphone jack allows private listening.

Customer Reviews of Sony HT-V600DP DVD-VCR Home Theater System
great system this system saved my tv by bypassing a bad rf connector and now i can use dvd and vcr thus it saved me hundreds by not having to buy a new tv. As for the negative reviews, i found the sound quality good, easy to use and all the features good, so if youre convinced the system is too cheap go spend more go buy yourself another brand name and get the same features at a higher price
Disappointing.
This home theater system failed me in so many ways. For such a costly system it really sounds terrible. When I turn down the surround sound and turn the TV volume up the speakers built in to my TV sound better! There are no brackets on the surround speakers for hanging from the wall, and the rubber feet that go on the bottom of each speaker came on strips like stickers. You're supposed to put the rubber feet on yourself, but they're so cheap that half of them didn't even stick. The remote is poorly designed; it is bulky and has a bunch of small buttons that are the same shape and size crammed together with a big blank space on the bottom half of the remote that has no buttons at all. The player itself was slow to respond to commands, taking a full five seconds (one one-thousand, two one-thousand, ...) to open the empty tray to receive a DVD, and wouldn't always answer commands to fast-forward or skip a scene the first time you pushed the button.

>So, it seems Sony was somehow able to cut costs on design, on quality and on the little things, but was unable to pass those savings on to the consumer. This system shouldn't even say Sony on it, it should say "Dealtronics," and it should be available for less than the cost of a good toaster.
Defective
While the system was easy to set up, unfortunately, the DVD player did not function perfectly. On several DVD's I tried, problems like the inability to select certain chapters of a movie, or the picture freezing up, occurred. (I tried the DVD's in another player and could not replicate the problem.) I sent it back and did not bother asking for a replacement product. Also, the buttons for DVD functions on the remote are really tiny and the user manual did not explain things as well as it should have.
