Of course, components are only half the story. The system also includes a pair of bass reflex speakers with "tuned" ports that increase and extend the bass response, along with a full complement of drivers (3.1-inch woofer, 1.6-inch tweeter, and 0.8-inch supertweeter per speaker). Contributing to the system's satisfying audio performance are the built-in equalizer--with rock, jazz, classic, hall, live, movie and flat modes--and Sony's Dynamic Sound Generator X-tra (DSGX) Mega Bass sound enhancer, which further boosts the lows.
Listeners can even set the CMT-EH10 to record a radio program when they're not home (for those who just can't stand to miss "Car Talk") or to serve as a sleep timer or alarm. The unit offers 10 timed shutoffs for people who like to drift off to sleep with music, and will wake to your choice of the radio or a CD. And as a final bonus, the system includes a PC/audio input. The dual-use jack can accommodate either digital music players, such as portable MP3 players or iPods, or PCs with speaker outputs. Once connected, users can listen to their full iPod or MP3 catalogs through the system's speakers, or they can stream digital music directly from their PCs.
Additional features include an easy-to-read LCD display, a comprehensive remote control, and a power save mode. Dimensions range from 6.45 by 9.25 by 10.44 inches (W x H x D) for the main unit to 5.71 by 9.25 by 6.1 inches for each speaker. The entire system is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

Customer Reviews of Sony CMT-EH10 Micro Shelf System with CD Player, Cassette Deck, and AM/FM Tuner
Worst FM receiver I've ever experienced. I returned it. Would not pick up an FM station I get perfectly well in the set it was replacing (an inexpensive Sony with a telescoping single antenna). I just wanted something smaller and more attractive. I'm not picky and I wasn't expecting much. I just wanted to listen to NPR, play Cassettes (books on tape), and CD's. It had the worst reception I've ever experienced. It would not separate channels. <

>This has a long wire for an FM antenna. You'd think that would allow some custom placement that would work. NO! Best was bunched up in the back and even then it (insert crude insulting rant from angry customer here!). It has an FM and an AM antenna. YOU CAN NOT SEPARATE THE TWO. You are stuck with the clunky AM antenna you may never use, on your counter top or desk. It has a proprietary PLUG for the stupid antennas so you can't even go out and buy a better FM antenna!!!! <

>As for the sound -- not good -- cheap speakers but that is what I expected at this price. The features indicate a good value but it is not if it does not have a good receiver or at least the option of overcoming its faulty receiver with a good antenna (not needed by any other radio to get the same station, including the one in my cheap, cheap mp3 player with NO antenna!)
Good Sound and Great Value
I bought this when my Philips system suddenly died after years of faithful service. Although the Sony cost less, it has bags more features which would only have featured in high-end models a couple of years ago. Firstly the RDS feature instantly tells you what station you're listening to on FM, although no additional info is given on this model (apart from the time). Secondly it plays mp3 CD's, and here it does scroll the track information along its cosy red dot-matrix display. Next there's an input socket which is ideal for plugging in your iPod or similar so you can be entertained while washing the dishes (what do you mean, you've got a dishwasher?). And finally there's a timer, which can turn the CD or radio on and off automatically, and is particularly useful for recording radio while you're out onto the built-in cassette deck (set timer for radio, turn unit to standby, press play and record buttons together - instruction manual fails to mention this capability). Last, but by no means least, how does it sound? For such compact speakers the Sony makes a very pleasing full-bodied sound, whether for pop, jazz, classical or just speech. There is a bass boost button (labelled DSGX - who thinks of these daft acronyms?) but this simply makes the sound bloated and unpleasant - there's plenty of bass without it. One criticism - the remote control is needed for some functions such as the timer, which cannot be accessed on the main unit, so don't lose it! Overall, then I'd give the Sony CMTEH10 a big thumbs-up!
