Customer Reviews of Sons of the Desert
Laurel and Hardy are outstanding in this hilarious comedy. "Sons of the Desert" is L+H's finest film; their wives forbid them to go to a lodge convention in Chicago, but Ollie makes up a story that he has to go to Honolulu for his "noives". Since Ollie's wife can't stand the Ocean, Stan goes with Ollie. But when the two return home the get a big suprise! Their story: "We ship-hiked!"
A classic film worth seeing time and time again.
Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were two of the many comic actors of the 1930's, and "Sons of the Desert" is one of their best works. The hilarious conflict between L&H and their wives was inevitable as Hardy bragged, "I go places and do things and THEN tell my wife!" When we finally see Mrs. Hardy (played by Mae Busch), it's apparent she isn't easily pushed over, and dictates Hardy's every move. Hardy tries to pull a fast one on his wife by pretending to be sick, so he and Laurel can con their way into going to the annual Sons of the Desert convention. I thought the funniest line was in the scene where Hardy's fake physician is actually a veterinarian. When he asked Laurel why he got a veterinarian, Laurel replied, "Well, I didn't think his religion would make any difference!" During the convention scenes, Charlie Chase is the laughable prankster as he pulls trick after trick on Laurel and Hardy, while his sharp tongue blasts out some of the most smart remarks one after the other! It's one laugh line after another in this movie. Another great gem from the 1930's!
disappointed
I purchased this video to watch with my 93 year old boss(he is my patient) and we both thought it was awful. We only laughed a few times. I guess we will have to buy the "best of" tapes where Laurel and Hardy do their short, hopefully funny, skits.
Any recommendations from anyone?
