Customer Reviews of Sonic Adventure Original Sound Track
One Of The Best Game Albums I've Heard When I first rented "Sonic Adventure DX (Director's Cut)" from Blockbuster Video, I was in awe as I listened to the great music in the game. Though it was "Sonic Adventure DX", it still had the same music and features as it did in the orignial Sega Dreamcast version. I really enjoyed the character selection, action stages, and most definetely: the music. The music was amazing. Each song gave a good description of each Action Stage. When you listen to "Mechanical Reasonance...for Final Egg", you can think of some sort of factory-type place. Also in "The Air...for Windy Valley", you can think of a great place full of lots of fun and adventure (which is exactly like what the stage is like!). I really enjoy the character themes as well. Amy Rose's theme, "My Sweet Passion", suits her very well. My favourite character themes are of: AMY, TAILS, and E-102 GAMMA. E-102's theme is very mysterious, and Tails' theme is very happy and suits him well too. CHAO's theme is so cute! I love it! Chao are such adorable creatures that you can breed and take care of in the Chao Garden. I love the CHAO RACE theme as well. I like that in each zone (unlike in "Sonic Adventure 2") there are 2 or more themes, showing changes in the zone. An example of that is the "Lost World" action stage. In the "Lost World", there are 3 themes, which are, "Tricky Maze", "Leading Lights", and "Chased By A Rock!". Each of them really show how the levels are changing and suit each piece of a stage well. I really enjoyed the music in this game. I find it to be more enjoyable than the music in "Sonic Adventure 2". "Sonic Adventure" isn't as well known (or so I think) as "Sonic Adventure 2"/"Sonic Adventure 2 Battle". But the music is so amazing. I just couldn't stop listening straight through the entire Digi-Log Conversation (on Amazon, it's called Digi-Log Conve). I hope that others will be able to listen to an amazing CD like this one.
Good soundtrack? Forget it, this is good /music/, period.
There is one thing I can say with all honesty about Sonic Adventure, and that's that the best part about it is the music. I ordered this CD on a whim, and was quite stunned at what I received. I can't stop listening to it. The people in the Sonic Team are phenomenal composers at all levels. It would take a highly trained ear to tell how much of the music is synthesizer work and how much (if any) is live. Now I don't want to get into the boring details of music theory, so I'll simply talk about the feel of the music. It's very energetic; "Playfully aggressive" is a good way to describe the soundtrack's overall texture. The whole soundtrack tells the story of a conflict that you can't help but have fun resolving. However, individually, the tracks are essentially songs. They don't follow a scatterbrained approach typical of movie soundtracks. They have forms and steady rhythms and definite scales (usually major or rock-pentatonic) like typical songs, while being free of the distraction of vocals. The guitar work could best be described as perfect, complete with hair-raising solos. And whoever played/programmed the bass guitar really knows how to do it; instead of simply following the melody, the bass work in this music almost always "does its own thing", so to speak, following the rhythm more than the melody and adding an even richer texture to the music. The drums provide all sorts of rhythms in all sorts of different meters, and are recorded with such finesse and creativity that you really feel like you're listening to a live, professional drummer. That is, the ghost notes are all there, the dynamics fluctuate, and the bass drum occasionally gets bludgeoned with 16th-note fills. And this is just for starters; this doesn't account for the amazing synthesizer music or the big band "Casinopolis" tracks. If you combine this creativity and skill these with the crystal-clear mixing and recording (as they did), you have a recipe for a top-notch game soundtrack.
Unlike Sonic Adventure 2 (whose soundtrack pales in comparison to this one), the orchestration of the music greatly enhances the feel of the levels, as well as the overall story. The orchestration is apparent everywhere; you'll first notice it when you listen to the Chaos music (the one you hear in the beginning of the game when you fight the creature for the first time). Crank up the bass, and you'll definetly hear those subtle, almost subsonic double-bass drum beats that'll shake the house. You'll feel them more than you'll hear them. Excellent way to add an ominous feeling to an ominous situation in the game. Next, the high-tempo breakbeat rhythm, bright synthesizer work, and energetic guitar solo in "Azure Blue World" is an excellent accompaniment to the first stage, "Emerald Coast", which is set on a beach. But when you get into the urban level "Speed Highway", the music pulsates with a rhythm that's half-techno, half-rock, overlayed with aggressive, intricate guitar and bass work, as well as samples. And who can forget the music played during the avalanche, "Be Cool, Be Wild, and Be Groovy"? Its high tempo, swing-rock rhythm, distortion guitars, and brass sections make the whole experience of fleeing an avalanche rather fun.
"Open Your Heart" is an excellent way to round up this excellent soundtrack. While the vocals are somewhat mediocre (and the lyrics could be better), the instrumentation is again at its finest. The guitar, bass, and drums all do their parts incredibly, even throwing in a bone-chilling solo right in the middle. A nice, energetic conclusion to an energetic soundtrack. You'll be satisfied.
All in all, this is not only an excellent game soundtrack. This is excellent music. After showing this soundtrack to my friends, they were bewildered when I told them what the music was actually from. And just about anyone who buys the soundtrack will likely feel the same once they realize how far the Sonic Team has progressed musically since those by-gone days when Sonic was still on the Sega Genesis console. It's only a shame the Sonic Adventure 2 soundtrack is so mediocre by comparison.
You gotta buy this!!!!
Even if it is only for one song. "I wanna fly high" is one of the best songs I have ever heard in my life, I kid you not. The lyrics are so sweet and luvly I cannot understand how anyone would be unable to like them. This is definitely a song to cheer you up no matter what mood you may be in. "Open your heart" is another cool song and it's hard to believe video games can have music as good as this, which is better than any Pop music I assure you. No CD collection would be complete without this awesome soundtrack. Go buy now!
