Customer Reviews of Soft 'n Wide Gate
perfect for grandma's house i needed to limit my 7 month old grandson to our great room, which has a normal size doorway and a wide opening. (a walk through gate previously used for a "grand-dog" works great for the normal opening). however, i found my choices for the 54" doorway were few. i read all of the reviews and purchased a sliding gate that would attach to the walls. it was extremely difficult to open/close and took up so much room it was a real eyesore. i returned it. i then decided to try the soft and wide gate. that was 2 months ago and i still love it! it goes up and comes down in seconds, it does not leave any marks on the wall, i like that he cannot climb it, he can still see me when i go down the hall, it will store easily and is priced very reasonably. i am 5'6" and can step over it. i really have not found anything to dislike and highly recommend it.
I can't live without my Soft 'n Wide Gates!
First of all, let me start by saying that this is not a gate intended for use with stairs, if that is what you need then get a gate that screws into the wall and swings open. That being said, this is a fantastic gate. I never thought I would find a gate that could adequately fit the entries to my living room. After a lot of searching I found this one on the internet. (no stores in the Hartford area had them!) I especially like the fact that the top and bottom can be adjusted independately of one another to accomodate baseboards - I don't think I have come across another gate that can do that trick! Once this baby is installed (correctly) it will not budge. Yes, it has taken the paint off the walls in a few spots, but in looking at the bigger picture that isn't such a big deal! I love the two I have so much that I just bought one for my neighbor's baby shower and she was thrilled.
Doesn't take paint off your walls
This product does not take paint off of your walls if you have even the slightest clue on how to use it. You're supposed to extend the rods longer than you need. You then press the ends together and they compress, making the rod shorter. Put it in place and release. An internal spring holds it in place very strongly.
These people complaining about paint being torn off are probably twisting the rods to attempt to length them *while touching the wall*! Of course it's going to take your paint off if you do that! But that's not how the product is supposed to work. A little common sense goes a long way, you know... If it isn't holding strong enough, pull the end of the rod away from the wall. It will compress the internal spring and you can then turn it until it's just barely touching the wall. Release and the tension will hold it securely. Don't turn the thing while it's compressed against your wall.
This is a great product. I love mine. Keeps the kids out of my office area.
