Customer Reviews of Snitch Factory
No Plot, No Characters, No Point Reading It. I have never visited San Francisco, other novels set in locations i've never visited haven't been problematic, in this case it is.
The mission district is described by mentioning shop fronts, markets and bars. This done more or less randomly through the book, and there are little, if any, overall descriptions of the mission district or where various buildings are in relation to each another.
Alot of the social status of the mission district is inferred through the choice of job for the main character, Charlene Hassler, welfare worker. However the social structure and income associated with the area is never explored in much depth.
There is little to no plot throughout the book. That's not to say the short chapters don't have some elegant writing, but there's no story and no realistic characters. Charlene Hassler shows no emotion when a fellow worker gets shot, yet she cares that all her cases get food stamps?
The cast of other characters get referred to by their first name and surnames interchangably. Relationships between characters get alluded to after events happen. There is little description of how the welfare office works to know if half the events are supposed to be significant or not. And, small events that could be made into interesting sub plots get lost very quickly.
Real Stuff
As a person who has been through the rigors of state assistance, I found this story of little lives fascinating. That is not to say that much happens in the book, just like not much happens in the lives of those stuck in that rut. Yet the humor, humanity, and atmosphere of the story pulls you through its pages pleasurably. It is a stark reality; Plate is showing us another side of life that has it's own antiheroes. Innovative & Highly recommended
I Wasn't Blown Away
This is definitely a books you'll enjoy a lot more if you've lived in or are intimately familiar with San Francisco's Mission district. That's because the story of a city social worker who bends the rules to help people out, goes drinking with her workmates, and is working on her third husband, isn't all that fascinating in and of itself. There is a good sense of atmosphere throughout, but it would be a lot more compelling if I knew the area and people at the heart of the narrative.
